DAVICHI is Feeling Nostalgia

Even if you’re not familiar with DAVICHI, chances are you have heard DAVICHI. Lee Haeri and Kang Minkyung make up the duo known for their killer ballads. From Descendants of the Sun’s “This Love,” to Scarlet Heart Ryeo’s heartbreaking “Forgetting You,” and my personal favorite It’s Alright This is Love with the same title—DAVICHI are the queens of tear-inducing ballads. So it comes as no surprise that they have released a similarly heart-wrenching single this summer.

Released on July 12, the digital single “마치 우린 없었던 사이,” with English title “Nostalgia,” was produced by another ballad master, Jungkey. While the summer months usually call for refreshing summer bops such as TWICE’s “Dance the Night Away,” or groovy R&B beats such as those in Crush’s new album, one can’t help but yearn for something more sentimental. “Nostalgia” is here for those who are not always bright and sunny all summer long, perhaps even those living through Korea’s rainy season. It speaks of a broken relationship—of wanting to forget you even met each other in order to ease the pain. However, the emotion behind the words and vocals of DAVICHI show that erasing memories can only do so much.

As usual, DAVICHI’s vocals complement each other’s flawlessly, weaving in and out of one another without effort as they carry the melody. Starting with a piano and soft vocals, they lead the way to the powerful chorus, slowly building up to gradual orchestral climax nearing the end. Overall, it’s a beautiful track that many hopeless romantics can’t help but relate to all too much.
