Red Velvet Teaches You How to be Energetic with “Power Up”
Red Velvet is back with a cute, energetic summer comeback! They have followed power groups like MAMAMOO and AOA and released their summer album. Summer Magic makes it their second summer comeback following their previous album, The Red Summer, released in 2017. This album tackles a different musical genre compared to their releases earlier this year as it leans more towards EDM. However, it is still gaining attention and love from all kinds of fans. Red Velvet is always surprising their fans with their unique concepts and musical style.
Their title song “Power Up” is an upbeat, electronic song that replicates 8-bit video game beats and plays with the lyrics by including their album name. The song is about having fun and gaining energy from doing what you love, which is the perfect way to end the summer season. The music video is filled with bright colors and a retro video game theme which perfectly matches the track. Each member shows a different side of themselves, from their hair to their outfits to their vocals.
“With You” is a personal favorite from the album because of its soft yet upbeat tempo and beautiful slow rap from Irene and Yeri. The song expresses positivity and is the perfect song for when you are feeling down. “Mr. E” is another upbeat electronic song about having a crush on someone who is mysterious and secretive, just like the title of the song. “Mosquito” is a sexy hip-hop song that shows off different vocal talents from each member. Each member is able to show off their rap skills—a positive surprise for ReVeluvs.
“Hit That Drum” is a catchy song about your heart beating like a drum when you see the person you have a crush on. “Blue Lemonade” is another favorite song on the album. It’s a mellow electronic song with a soothing harmonization from Wendy in the beginning. This song is the perfect hype song when you don’t know how to confess your feelings to your crush. Lastly, the English version of “Bad Boy” from The Perfect Red Velvet rounds out the album. The song was first showcased to the public at KCON NY 2018 which received an enormous amount of attention and love from international fans.
Red Velvet has come back with another Red concept to contrast their recent and successful Velvet concepts. The girls continue to showcase different genres of music that are exceptional amongst other idol groups. Each member was able to present different vocal and dance talents through this new mini-album.
