Take A Seat in Your Movieroom

Spending a hot summer day in the sun makes you sweat for hours; don’t you feel like cooling off in a cold movie theater? Don’t worry, as this is possible to achieve in your very own bedroom. Turn on the fan, set up your device to watch Movieroom, and turn off the lights. There, it’s that simple.

What The Show Is About

First of all, what is Movieroom? One of JTBC’s newest releases, Movieroom is a variety show with the main objective of introducing films. Comparing two movies of the same genre, the cast has a discussion on various aspects from the overarching theme to the smallest of details that greatly influence each film. By discussing these ideas, the cast is able to form an opinion on each movie or perhaps break their initial impression by relating it to our society today, succeeding in drawing the cast further into the cinematic world.

Movieroom’s hosts Yoon Jongshin and Jang Sungkyu lead the program on with their goal of producing genuine conversation. Quite a change from their playful images on other programs (such as RadioStar and Knowing Bros), the two men give off a more serious vibe as they hold the responsibility of directing waves of deep emotion, laughter, or tears from the film to the viewer. Both MCs are able to express their honest thoughts and create a bond with the audience who find a point of agreement in the hosts’ words.

What to Expect

The intention of this program is to show the perspective of one’s thoughts on a movie. The Korean title (“방구석 1열”) was derived from a phrase used commonly in Korea; used frequently to associate a fan who watches an event at home for the reason of unfortunately failing to attend it, the title holds the meaning of “watching in the first row” but in your room. Solely from the name, it is possible to see how easy it is to formulate a personal connection with Movieroom; not everything has to be seen at the actual site to enjoy it, right?

Just like this, Movieroom contains the unceasing enthusiasm of exploring the media industry. A different but popular way to be entertained, the program provides the opportunity for everyone to enjoy them at home while making comments along with commentary from the cast (something you can never do at the movies). Stressing the various details of each movie, the hosts become entranced by the film and engage the viewers into the show. The location of where you watch the film does not define the feeling of thrill, sorrow, or joy you experience; the significance and meaning behind the movies do it all.

Despite its recent start, Movieroom has already covered a wide range of movies. From romance to fantasy to thriller, it’s hard to predict what genre is next in line. Not only does this show revisit films in Korea, it also reaches out to compare movies outside of the domestic region. From this, it can be seen that language is no longer a barrier when watching a film; the plotline that emits the emotion communicated through characters and other components (such as props or setting) is the prime element to understanding the story in depth.

The program also features new guests every week based on the movies shown in the episodes. Starring actresses and/or actors along with the producers, the MCs invite guests to engage in group conversations by contributing interesting experiences to spice up the discussions.

Having the ability to interact with films in the presence of the creators and the featured stars themselves brings an insight to the hosts and viewers. Whether it may be a new perspective or a previously-established view, the show associates it with the main theme. The message intended to be conveyed drives the film to be portrayed in a certain way, especially differing based on the creators; the message also plays the key role in bringing everyone together. After sharing a conversation with participants of the movie, the hosts and viewers are able to understand the importance of certain lines or scenes and what purpose they serve to bring the film to life.

If you're a moviegoer, everything has gotten way easier for you. Although it hasn't been long since this show started, it's definitely something to look for in the near future. The addition of Movieroom to your TV schedule is bound to make your Friday night exciting and worthy of anticipation. Remember to watch out for the latest movie releases covered on the show, and don’t forget that the best of Movieroom is always with you!
