GWSN Presents a Dreamy Debut in “Puzzle Moon”

A brand new girl group is on the scene! GWSN debuted on the 5th of the month with first mini-album The Park in the Night Part One. The acronym is short for “Girls in the Park.” This seven-member group under Kiwi Pop, sublabel of Kiwi Media Group, garnered pre-debut attention with the release of a dance cover video to BTS’s “DNA” mashed up with BLACKPINK’s “Whistle.” Member Miya got the most talk from the video, and has even been called the “3rd Generation Amber” (of f(x)) by fans.

The Title: “Puzzle Moon”

The music video has a very familiar yet original feel, with a dreamy concept that is reminiscent of past releases from GFRIEND, WJSN, LOONA and even a little bit of Dreamcatcher without the dark undertones. The choreography is very intricate and eye-catching, with detailed hand movements that mirror the shifting of a rubik’s cube. As a dreamy concept, it tends to be much more feminine and soft in a classic girl group expectation. Musically, the song is very vocally focused with a short rap verse. The beat is definitely rooted in traditional EDM and pop influences, and while still solid, it doesn’t quite fit the unique choreography; however, it does fit the concept fairly well, and gets catchier with each listen.

The Album

The Park in the Night Part One comes with five additional tracks after the title. The album overall has a very cohesive sound, with every song possessing an EDM and pop influence for its melody. The greatest standout is “Melting Point,” which also has very clear hip-hop and R&B influences in comparison to the other tracks. “Shy Shy,” “Let It Grow,” “Yolowa” and “Melting Point” are all quite energetic tracks, but the final song “Lullaby” has a more acoustic and ballad feel to it. This track really shines a light on the vocal prowess of the members and definitely stands out as a strong point for this rookie group.

Be sure to check out GWSN’s great debut and keep an eye out for what this group has in store for the future!
