Super Junior D&E Want You to Feel the “Danger” in New Music Video
Eunhyuk and Donghae of Super Junior D&E have come back swinging with their new song and album, featuring title track “Danger.” This song brings a darker feel to the Super Junior D&E discography and lets Eunhyuk and Donghae show another piece of their colorful repertoire.
The Music Video
Like most grunge-themed K-Pop music videos, the main set is an abandoned warehouse with the special guest appearance of an empty arena; these two sets are part of the classic K-Pop “Bad Boy” trope. However, these two sets are not the only ones that appear—a third set is a circular room that’s decorated in a simple glossy black and white. Eunhyuk and Donghae are dressed head to toe in blacks and reds. The dance break outfits feature harnesses. To complete the dangerous look, they are covered in temporary tattoos. Some of the dance break scenes take place in the empty stadium on a stage that is flanked with large chain link fences and torches that spit fire. Others take place in the abandoned parking garage. The choreography is aggressive and definitely different than what we are used to seeing out of Suju D&E. Different scenes sequence through the three sets, and the angles vary and are erratic to add to the theme of “Danger.”
The Song
The song starts out with a heavy hip-hop influenced beat, but then the melody added over the top makes me think of what the sound of a dragonfly’s flight pattern would sound like when added to music. This sound is especially prevalent during the chorus. The song is good, but the one thing that ruins it for me is the strange beat drop in the chorus. There is a strong clap beat that can be heard throughout the song as well. The way the song speeds up and slows down from verse to chorus creates a bit of audio whiplash. The one thing that would make me love this song most is if they extended the main beat throughout the whole song instead of introducing it in weird drops during the chorus. The one part of the song that helped it redeem itself was the vocal interlude towards the end.
Overall will I download this song? Probably. Is it a song I will feel bad skipping? Not really. The imagery in the music video was exciting and definitely a new flavor for Super Junior D&E. I hope once they work the kinks out in this new sound that we’ll get a more solid track.
