“Feel Special” with These Fresh B-Sides
So it hasn’t been long since the release of TWICE’s new title track “Feel Special,” and now it’s time to cover the fabulous B-Sides accompanying it! Alongside these five new bops, they also released a Korean version of “Breakthrough”, however we won’t be reviewing it. “Rainbow”
Starting off with this incredibly quirky track, “Rainbow” is the kind of song that leaves people with wide smiles and inspiration to start the day. True to the album’s name, this song is all about feeling confident and finding who you are—and what better way to do that than walk across a rainbow? It’s a pretty subtle metaphor, being present only in the chorus, but the idea of walking to the “purple line” like a destination point makes it clear that this journey crosses the myriad of colors that make a rainbow! Rainbows are often used in tales of discovery, such as how there’s a pot of gold waiting at the end, but this is a neat twist to it. We’d expect nothing less of Nayeon, who actually helped to write the song itself alongside hitting an impressive whistle note before the last chorus hits.
“Get Loud”
Ready for a sudden burst of energy? “Get Loud” brings exactly that with a heavy instrumental that sounds like the girl power anthem K-Pop deserves. If it’s not Dahyun’s singing during the pre-chorus or the catchy whistle that comes shortly after that lures you into endless streaming, we don’t know what’ll do it. The track is definitely on a different wavelength to the rest of the album, but with Jihyo herself penning the lyrics, there’s no surprise as this song perfectly represents the strong vocals that she brings to the TWICE team.
“Trick It”
This song starts one way and ends another. Pardon the pun, but it’s almost as if the track tricks us with a sweet, delicate melody before dropping in the disco beat for the chorus. Nonetheless, “Trick It” is the song for those who want a taste of every aspect of TWICE, from the chorus power-couple of Jihyo and Nayeon to the more feathery voices possessed by Mina and Tzuyu. It’d be difficult to describe the song without including Dahyun and Chaeyoung’s contributions though, seeing as Dahyun herself wrote the lyrics to this incredibly diverse track. With that being said, this bop has a rollercoaster for an instrumental and not giving this track a spot on your playlists would almost be tricking yourself out of one of TWICE’s most unique pieces.
“Love Foolish”
Electrifying would be one way to describe this electropop track that vastly differs from anything we’ve seen before. From Chaeyoung’s deep voice to the bountiful English phrases, this song emits vibes that are very different to “Likey” or “What is Love” and more closely resembles the likes of “Fancy” with an extra serving of passion. Not only did Momo write this track, which perfectly represents her, but she was also given a rap segment which is a rare occasion as Momo is the lead dancer alongside being an established singer.
“21:29”
It’s not Christmas, but this lullaby will definitely have you pining for the Winter season. This is a song of friendship and being together, which is the message TWICE also promotes in its title track. With this song, however, every member of TWICE was able to write their own message into the lyrics, making it a lot more personal for each member. Every word is important in its own way and the dreamy instrumental makes every syllable a lot more sentimental.
