Get to Know New York-Born Rapper Flowsik
You may be familiar with many American-born Korean artists like Eric Nam, Jay Park, and Jae of DAY6, but did you know that rapper Flowisk is also from America? Flowsik joins the ranks of early American-born pioneers who went to pursue a career in Korea, but you don’t hear much about that fact.
Flowsik began his career in 2011 when he debuted with hip-hop group Aziatix. At the time of the group’s formation, Flowsik had made a name for himself as an underground rapper in New York City. The group lasted for about four years before disbanding in 2015, which is when Flowsik began focusing on his solo career. Though still a part of the Aziatix trio, he worked as a featured artist with famous popular groups JYJ and Trouble Maker, including solo features for XIA, Kim Jaejoong, and HyunA.
After the disbandment of his group, Flowsik took part in Show Me The Money 5 in 2016 and found some chart success in his collaboration tracks with famous rappers Dok2 and The Quiett. He also collaborated with Luizy, better known to fans as Cho Seungyeon of UNIQ and formerly X1. Flowsik’s talent as a rapper really came to the forefront on his time on the show, best exemplified by his rap battle on the show with Donutman.
As far as solo projects, Flowsik hasn’t released many songs himself, which is a shame, considering he has quite the voice for rap. On top of having a very impressive flow in general, his lower vocal tone adds a layer of intensity to his overall aura. A favorite release of mine from 2018, “Bbung,” has an air of ferocity that isn’t easily achieved. Flowsik’s monumental talents are best exemplified in this track as well, and it’s perfect for letting off some steam when you’re angry.
With sparse singles dropped and no full album, it’s hard for this rapper to gain traction among the myriad of other talents in the business. Flowsik is often overlooked when people mention notable names in the hip-hop industry, and it’s about time we change that.
