Red Velvet B-Sides
It’s a known fact that whenever Red Velvet releases new music, we’re guaranteed an incredible album filled with amazing tracks. For this week’s B-Sides, we’ll be exploring some of the wonderful B-Sides we’ve received from Red Velvet over the years.
“Huff n Puff”
The Red is Red Velvet’s first full-length album, released on September 9, 2015. This album was all about their “red” concept, focusing on lively tracks and bright colors. Promoted alongside title track “Dumb Dumb,” “Huff n Puff” is a fun electro-pop track about falling into the world of Alice in Wonderland, with the girls singing in the chorus about how they have to run and jump to be able to see everything, huffing and puffing along the way.
“Attaboy”
“Attaboy” is off of 2017’s wildly popular Perfect Velvet album and is also featured on the repackage, The Perfect Red Velvet. This album showcased their “velvet” concept, but “Attaboy” feels more like a mixture of their two sides. “Attaboy” starts off a bit slow and sultry, the intro playing with deep synthesizers and a low drum beat before the track takes a turn into electro-hip-hop territory. The lyrics focus on the girls singing about their relationship with a boy, doing whatever they feel like doing as long as they’re doing it together.
“Mr. E”
Going back to the “red” concept, “Mr. E” is off the mini-album Summer Magic, released in 2018. This is definitely a pop track through and through, upbeat and happy. It starts off with audio of a jungle, fading out to introduce a drum beat before exploding into its full pop potential at the chorus. Synthesizers are used throughout, as is the jungle element from the intro, giving this track a fun twist as the ladies of Red Velvet sing about the unknown, mysterious feelings about their love interests.
“Ladies Night”
“Ladies Night” was first released on The ReVe Festival: Day 2 mini-album in 2019 before also being featured on The ReVe Festival: Finale, the group’s first compilation album. “Ladies Night” is a fun disco-esque track, featuring the girls singing about a ladies’ night, describing it as being the perfect night because they’re all together. And honestly, who doesn’t enjoy a night with just the girls? There’s more of an emphasis on the members’ vocals in this track, the backing instrumentals not as overpowering and in-your-face compared to other Red Velvet songs.
