EVERGLOW and the “Adios” Comeback
On August 19, 2019, EVERGLOW released their second single album HUSH. Released five months after their debut, HUSH featured three new tracks by the girl group—“Hush,” “Adios,” and “You Don’t Know Me.” They released one music video for this album for their incredibly popular track “Adios.” Shortly after releasing the music video, they also released a performance version, a dance practice, and a fanchant guide.
The Music Video
While a performance version for the “Adios” music video was also released, the music video is almost straight choreography to begin with, with only a couple of solo shots and group scene shots in-between the dancing. The few solo shots that do take place in the music video center around the theme of the song, mainly saying goodbye to an ex-lover and becoming their own person, taking the reins back on their lives. At one point, the camera focuses on a lion statue just as its eyes turn purple before the chorus hits and we’re back to EVERGLOW dancing. The music video ends with a close-up shot of maknae Yerin whispering the repeated line, “Goodbye, Au Revoir, Adios,” before the scene quickly cuts to the members lying on a sheet of ice.
The Comeback Performances
EVERGLOW made their comeback on August 22, 2019 on M!COUNTDOWN where they performed “You Don’t Know Me” and “Adios.” For their performance of “You Don’t Know Me,” the members wore bright colored outfits befitting the fun, peppy tempo of the track. Most of the girls also wore cute, chunky platform sneakers or heels, making them almost the same height as tallest member Aisha, who wore pink Converse high-tops.
Their performance of “Adios” featured the girls in the black outfits from the desert choreography shots in the music video and once again wearing some form of platform shoe to keep a similar height to Aisha. The stage for it was incredibly simple, with EVERGLOW performing in front of their group logo and sparklers shooting out against the screens behind them during the chorus. Members Onda and Mia both had their hair up in ponytails while the rest had their hair down.
The Legacy
HUSH debuted at No. 5 on the Gaon Weekly Albums Chart while all three tracks charted on Billboard U.S. World Digital Songs Chart, with “Adios” at No. 2, “Hush” at No. 8, and “You Don’t Know Me” at No. 10.
“Adios” was included in multiple year-end “best of” lists, including Dazed’s “The 20 Best K-Pop Songs of 2019” where it ranked No. 19 and Buzzfeed’s “30 Best K-Pop Songs of 2019” and “30 Best K-Pop Music Videos of 2019,” ranking No. 5 and No. 30 respectively.
EVERGLOW received their first music show win on The Show on September 24, 2019, with the group up against “Devil” by CLC and “Deja Vu” by Dreamcatcher. The girls looked completely shocked when they won, with leader E:U mentioning multiple times that she wasn’t sure what to say before Aisha began to thank their families and fans, Forevers.
