Christmas but Make it Horror: TWICE Sings About Heartbreak In “Cry For Me”

If the Holidays season for you starts on Halloween and you enjoy your fair share of Krampus, Gremlins, Silent Night movies like me, this one’s for you. TWICE takes a break from the usual cute, heartwarming, cozy vibes most Christmas comebacks exude with their new seasonal release, “Cry For Me.” The melodies certainly fall on the darker side of the pop spectrum. You can still dance to it, but you better have that slick red dress with a slit up your tights and stiletto heels on, flaunting those who broke your heart this year. The single art alone, thorns and blood red, express the lyrics perfectly.

The girls sing not only of heartbreak, but also of revenge. “Cry For Me” is all about the hardships of love, a love that’s been broken and wishing the same pain towards those who hurt you. Now, of course, one shall not condone violence, but sometimes some people do deserve a massive crying session after being the cause of many to others. However, “Cry For Me” does wish for forgiveness and for things to be patched up, asking for this open waterfall of tears to show that they can change and forgiveness can come. It’s bold and a new take on Holiday soundtracks. The Concept Film, “&,” is also absolutely chilling. The girls are surrounded by blood red walls, candles, thorns, and beautifully dressed for a night of mourning. Once again, throw them on the set of any horror Christmas movie and no one would question it.

As far as choreography goes, I am not the expert to dissect. However, in true TWICE fashion, it comes in beautiful formations and visuals. TWICE’s Christmas gift to us was not just a song, and not just one choreography video, but two. This time, the girls are all dressed in monochrome white outfits, contrasting a blood red wall, something I like to think was intentional on their creative director’s part. The first choreography video is more like those we are used to watching, a steady-cam placed across from the girls showing them dance at a wide angle. Beautiful and a wonderful guide for those looking to learn the dance. The second video, however, is where movie magic comes in. The camera this time follows the girls around while they make direct eye contact with the camera under mood lighting. Once again, chilling. “Cry For Me” is a must-have for every Halloween and Christmas playlist.
