“Breath”

In the lead up to the full album release, GOT7 came out of the gate running with their upbeat and fun pre-release track “Breath.” From the get-go, GOT7 lets listeners know that they are a force to be reckoned with. “Breath” is refreshing and literally breathes life into the vibe and feel of the song. The track is centered around the coming of love coming to life and how “you” (the listener) helps GOT7 be able to breathe better. The song also encapsulates the exciting and giddy feelings of being in love. However, “Breath” is not just for romantic love, but also platonic love. It’s a song that many can relate to this type of happiness and love. Diving deeper into the sound of the song, “Breath” is heavy with its pop sound, with a catchy and addictive beat. It is a song that is meant to lift the mood up.

The music video for “Breath” is seamless and feels like a one-take type of composition but thanks to the smooth match cutting, it keeps viewers and fans engaged. The camera is constantly following a GOT7 member, all who have their moment to shine but are often seen singing along to another member’s line. One thing to take note of in the music video is that it begins with an art gallery with different pieces of artwork lining the wall, however one large piece is left blank. As the music video progresses, it pulls viewers in as if they are taken into an art piece itself and following the story that ebbs throughout the artwork. At the very end of the music video, the large blank frame begins to reveal an image of a thin white veil that can be interpreted as the physical form of breath.

“LAST PIECE”

As “LAST PIECE” is the official title track for the album, it is a continuation of its sister song “Breath” except with a twist. While “Breath” is fun and happy, “LAST PIECE” takes on a much more serious and darker tone that is centered towards yearning and searching for love. The song goes further as to drive the point that they are incomplete without their other half. In order to feel whole once more, that special person is their missing “last piece” they need. The song leans more towards R&B with heavy synthesizers, giving it that grittier edge compared to “Breath.” The chorus of the song is much more intense as it picks up, giving it a rock type of feel but using synthesizers.

Picking right back up from the music video for “Breath,” the music video for “LAST PIECE” begins in the same main street that Jackson was last seen in “Breath” but in a darker setting. “LAST PIECE” is more choreography-centered as fans get to see more of GOT7’s dance skills. But just like the previous music video, the art gallery is prominent as a main set but also incorporates match cuts at a faster pace that give it that smooth, almost one-take kind of music video. Fans should take note that at the beginning of the video we see the group connected by their hands and arms to create a circle but then break apart as the song goes on. As the video ends, GOT7 comes back together as a whole and recreates the circle from the start, which gives the music video a deeper meaning as it can also be interpreted as GOT7 is not whole unless all seven members are together. With “LAST PIECE,” it is Youngjae (who was not predominantly featured) that completes the circle as he is the “missing last piece” that GOT7 needs. One can also interpret the video as GOT7 themselves are the art pieces as the video does connect to the art gallery and they are often seen in the room with all the frames and artwork.

The Album

With love being the theme of the album, all the songs are tailored to the different stages of love. As the title tracks cover the stages of excitement and yearning, there are songs like “WAVE” and “Thank You, Sorry” that cover more of the pain that comes with love and trying to overcome the trials that it may bring. “I Mean It” is a song that emphasizes that the word “love” is serious and when GOT7 says that whatever this feeling of love is, they do mean it. It isn’t a term they throw around lightly. There will be a song meant for everyone that many can relate to. It also comes as no surprise that the members once again took part in the production of some of the songs, like “LAST PIECE” and “Breath,” showing that GOT7 can tackle it all and showcase their skills in production (although this is not the first time and they very much are good at what they do).

Overall, GOT7’s album is a delight from beginning to end. There is a song that does not disappoint and it’ll be hard to choose just one favorite off the album. Breath of Love: Last Piece has to be one of GOT7’s best albums to date and fans simply will not get enough. Despite only two comebacks in 2020, GOT7 has a range of releases that are deserving of praise and this is a highly recommended listen. GOT7 ends the year on a superb note with Breath of Love: Last Piece taking the cake for the group.
