TWICE Goes to the Movies: Pt 2. “What is Love?”
Following the success of “Cheer Up,” TWICE returned to the movies once again in their 2019 comeback, “What is Love?” Unlike “Cheer Up”’s exploration into the various genres that cinema has offered us, “What is Love?” focuses solely on the world of romance and how it is portrayed on screen.
Along with their beloved ONCEs, TWICE watch each member portray their favorite movie romances, injecting their unique personalities into these well-known scenes to make them truly their own. Thus ensues a music video filled with homages, hilarality, and happiness and is arguably their best video to date. But did you manage to spot all the references they made? If you didn’t, here’s a list of which films made the final cut.
NAYEON - The Princess Diaries
Much like in “Cheer Up,” it is Nayeon who kicks off this film-filled feast with her homage to 2001 classic, The Princess Diaries. She takes on the role of leading lady Mia, the unsuspecting heir to the throne of Genovia and one of Anne Hathaway’s best roles to date. Alongside Sana, Mina, and Jihyo, who play her classmates, and Momo, playing the role of her best friend, Nayeon brings to life Mia’s quirks with ease and makes her transformation into a princess seem effortless.
JEONGYEON - Ghost
If there is one scene that springs to mind from the 1990 film Ghost, then it is the pottery scene—and TWICE knows it. Jeongyeon becomes Molly whilst it is the bubbly Sana that fills in for Patrick Swayze, and together they recreate the intimate scene in their own way. Instead of the romantic flare, there are friendly giggles as Sana attempts to kiss Jeongyeon, who pulls away from her advances. It is a perfect homage to Ghost’s signature scene and we couldn’t see it ending any other way.
MOMO - La La Land
As the lead dancer of TWICE, it is no shock that Momo’s dance skills are showcased yet again (not that we’re complaining). This time, we are treated to Momo’s graceful side as she pays homage to the movie musical La La Land. Momo dons the stunning yellow dress that has become the film’s signature look and refreshes the dance to “A Lovely Lovely Night” alongside maknae Tzuyu as they embrace modern love for old Hollywood.
SANA - Pulp Fiction
After appearing as Jeongyeon’s partner in her homage to Ghost, Sana now takes on one of Uma Thurman’s most notable roles to date: Pulp Fiction’s Mia Wallace. Easily distinguishable with the white shirt and dark hair that is synonymous with the character, Sana adds her own dynamic twist to the film's well-known dance scene with Tzuyu, who acts as her John Travolta. What makes this scene even better is the background acting. If you look closely, you will be able to see the TWICE members in the background, goofing around in more ways than one as the spectators of the iconic dance.
JIHYO - Love Letter
Out of the movie references TWICE has used in their videos, Love Letter is the only one to have been repeated. Originally being honored by our shy penguin Mina in “Cheer Up,” it is now Jihyo’s turn to recreate some of the best-known moments from Shunji Iwai’s 1995 feature. Alongside Jeongyeon, who takes the role of the male lead once again, Jihyo helps to add another layer in the group’s quest to understand what is love in the realm of movies.
MINA - La Boum
Mina takes on the role of 13-year-old Vic, the protagonist of French rom-com La Boum, in which the young Vic attempts to find her true love in a way that only 13 year olds could. Surrounded by balloons, streamers, and other party iconography, Mina recreates the film’s headphone scene that takes place during the film’s signature party. Although we don’t know who is behind the headphones until the very end, the reveal is completely worth it and is bound to make you giggle.
DAHYUN - COMMERCIAL BREAK
Unlike her other members, Dahyun does not have a movie reference to call her own. Instead, her rap is a commercial break in this movie mish mash, paying homage to several commercial genres including beauty, health, and fashion. This isn’t to say that Dahyun doesn’t have a character to play. In fact, her appearances alongside her fellow members are arguably the best in the music video. She first appears alongside Mina as the male counterpart from La Boum before appearing alongside fellow rapper Chaeyoung in a hilarious appearance as Leon from Leon the Professional, which is the costume she uses within later promotions.
CHAEYOUNG - Leon the Professional
Following on from Dahyun, Chaeyoung assumes the role of Mathilda from controversial film Leon the Professional, originally played by 11-year-old Natalie Portman. Chaeyoung recreates the scene in which the young Mathilda plays a game with Leon, dressing up as various figures such as Madonna, Charlie Chaplin, and Marilyn Monroe. Chaeyoung’s portrayal is likewise filled with glee, as she showcases her charms through each outfit, capturing the childish nature of Mathilda to a tee.
TZUYU - Romeo + Juliet
Of course, no homage to love in film is complete without Baz Luhrmann’s remake of the most iconic love story of all time, Romeo + Juliet. Tzuyu takes on the moniker of Juliet, donning the same angel costume that has now become synonymous with Clare Danes’ original portrayal of the character. Vocalist Jeongyeon acts as her Romeo (a worthy substitute for Leonardo DiCaprio) and the pair recreate the iconic fish tank scene in which Romeo and Juliet first meet at the Capulets’ masquerade ball.
