B-Sides: February 2020 Favorites Pt.1

Ringing in the third week of February, we can already say that the month has been quite busy in regards to comebacks. From the most anticipated return of IZ*ONE, to iKON’s and The Boyz first comeback after a member’s departure, February has been a month of love and hate. Besides the jaw-dropping music videos, the groups have also managed to give us plenty of tracks to enjoy. This week, we give a few chosen B-Sides to give a listen.

“All The World” – iKON

It is indeed a bittersweet experience to receive the boys as a group of six after almost a year long hiatus. Being one of the most impactful comebacks for the act’s career, iKON made sure to appeal to every type of listener by laying simple yet elegant melodies with their latest album, i DECIDE. “All The World '' is an upbeat pop track with catchy and addictive tunes. The chorus chants “Addictive, addictive, addictive, you may be dangerous” as the members sing about experiencing spring year round because of the girl they are in love with. The rhythm and repetitive lyrics make the song to be one of the enjoyable listens in the album. Now that the group has finally got to see their beloved iKONICs, the fans can happily sing, “The whole, whole, whole world is completely filled with you.

“Asteroid” – PENTAGON

PENTAGON’s first full-length album UNIVERSE: THE BLACK HALL deserves universal attention. “Asteroid” is a track with heavy instrumentals giving importance to rich musical sound. The chorus sings “You are my asteroid” as the members lovably call to their fans as fated lovers. With metaphors of celestial bodies and astronomical references, the lyrics seemingly get to attract the listeners. A causal blend of both the vocal and rap line keep the track engaged and well paced.

“Die For You” – PENTAGON

Another PENTAGON song “Die For You” with electro pop influence takes the listeners to a different genre and concept of love. The song begins as Yeo One breathes “Lastly, tell me you love me, I died once,” introducing us to a sadistic love drama. With a chorus, “I would die for you, I would cry for you,” the track continues to bring in related imagery of death, indicating the toxicity of the relationship, yet the members are ready to submit themselves or even die to earn the desired love. Adding up to the unusual approach to love, the grand instrumentals and catchy chorus make the listeners fall in love with the track instantly.

“No Lie” – EVERGLOW

For a lighter mood we have “No Lie” from EVERGLOW’s latest mini album, reminiscence. The bright track with uplifting beats and sweet vocals take a trip down the beautiful memory lane of love. Being the protagonists, the members are sure that it is not only them being lonely, but also their former lover. Despite the lyrics giving a low vibe, the music bubbles as a dance along song with catchy chorus to sing along. Though the track lacks a little because of the unjust line distribution, it still manages to be a vibrant song to stay longer in a party playlist.

“Shake You Down” - The Boyz

The Bs have been waiting for months to finally have The Boyz’s first full album REVEAL, and it is a treasure. One of the nine prominent tracks in the album, “Shake You Down,” sounds more like an opening song to an action movie or series. With a spooky aura, the track opens up to reveal us to beasty and passionate lovers. Following the theme from their title track, “Reveal,” the song once again projects the compassion of the wolf man, as Jacob strikes “Hunt you like an animal.” Being a heavy electro beat song; the track paves the way to high piercing vocal hits and rapid rap verses. Notably, Sunwoo gets to shine greater as a rapper, while New scores with his confident chorus lines. From the initial “Woo ho,” start, the mellow bridging verses to the elevated climax, everything sounds rich and bold, boasting the group’s new mature side.
