Be Ambitious N Do It, The Essential Guide to BVNDIT
From MNH Entertainment comes BVNDIT, the sister group to powerhouse soloist and former I.O.I member, Chungha. The five-piece girl group, comprised of members Yiyeon, Songhee, Jungwoo, Simyeong and Seungeun, are the debut group to come from the company and have already made a killer impact. Standing for “Be Ambitious N Do It,” the group debuted on April 10, 2019 and their ambitious nature has certainly not gone unnoticed by the K-Pop world. Despite having been active for less than a year, BVNDIT’s dance and vocal prowess, as well as their eccentric personalities, have already led to many fans proudly calling themselves BVNDITBULs (the group’s official fandom name). But who exactly are BVNDIT?
The Members
YIYEON
Jung Yiyeon (정이연) is the oldest member of BVNDIT. Born on May 28, 1995, Yiyeon is a former member of Maroo Entertainment girl group 1PS under the stage name Dasol, however never made her official debut as the group quietly disbanded. Now Yiyeon is the leader of BVNDIT, assuming the role of main rapper, lead vocalist, as well as the face of the group. She is also a very close friend of fellow label mate Chungha, who has been one of the biggest supporters of Yiyeon’s—and BVNDIT’s—debut.
SONGHEE
Yoon Songhee (윤송희) is BVNDIT’s lead vocalist. Born on November 8, 1998, Songhee was the first member of BVNDIT to be revealed to the public. Known for her unique vocal tone and outstanding visuals, Songhee is a bubbly and colorful addition to BVNDIT.
JUNGWOO
Uhm Jungwoo (엄정우) is BVNDIT’s main vocalist. Born on April 2, 1999, Jungwoo is an incredible vocalist whose talents are yet to have been truly explored in BVNDIT’s discography but act as a secret weapon that BVNDIT are sure to use some time soon. Although none of the members speak fluent English, Jungwoo is actively trying to improve hers.
SIMYEONG
Lee Simyeong (이시명) is the lead dancer of BVNDIT. Born May 27, 1999, Simyeong is the tallest member and the visual of the group, as well as one of the brightest personalities. Like fellow member Songhee, Simyeong is a big fan of the ballad genre and spicy food.
SEUNGEUN
Shim Seungeun (심승은) is BVNDIT’s maknae and dance powerhouse. Born December 27, 2000, Seungeun is a black belt in Taekwondo and would still be pursuing the sport if she wasn’t an idol. Much like her group’s moniker, Seungeun has ambitions to debut as an actress and produce her own music.
“Hocus Pocus”
BVNDIT cast a spell with their debut single “Hocus Pocus,” which tells the story of a girl who feels bewitched as she falls for someone. The single would act as a taste of their signature electro-pop sound as well as a perfect, playful introduction to the quirks of the group.
“Dramatic”
Compared to the bright and breezy sound of “Hocus Pocus”, “Dramatic” is a lot more, well, dramatic. The single features a killer bassline that acts as the heartbeat of the song, helping to drive this powerful first comeback into the minds of fans. Unlike their other comebacks, “Dramatic”’s music video acts as a performance video, showcasing the stellar performing abilities within this five-piece. Whether it be through Yiyeon’s seductive raps, Jungwoo’s vocals, or Seungeun’s dancing, the group makes a strong impression that leaves fans wanting more.
“Dumb”
“Dumb” is BVNDIT’s strongest and most successful comeback to date and shows how the group, despite only being rookies, have truly found their musical stride. Not only does this comeback perfectly showcase the group’s exceptional dance abilities, it also finally shows off the incredible vocals of main vocalist Jungwoo, whose angelic ad libs add another layer of excellence to this colorful track.
The release of “Dumb” prompted the group to release a Christmas dance practice for the single thanks to its November release date. With Songhee acting as the group’s Santa (who rides an inflatable reindeer) and the other members in feminine Claus-like attire, the chaos of this video spreads the bubbly cheer that we have come to love and appreciate from BVNDIT.
“Cool”
“Cool” is BVNDIT’s latest comeback to date. The digital single was released February 6, 2020 as a part of MNH Entertainment’s New.wav project, which aims to connect their artists to a wider, global audience. BVNDIT are the first artists to take part in the project and connect with their English speaking audiences by releasing the single entirely in English.
The single is a quirky addition to BVNDIT’s strong discography, featuring a scrapbook style music video that highlights the chaotic energy of the group. The single takes a more upbeat tone than their previous works and highlights the power of the group as a unit. “Cool” sees them wave goodbye to the bad influences in their life and find strength in each other because at least they’ll have one another to help them get through anything.
What’s Next For BVNDIT?
As a group, BVNDIT are unashamedly themselves. They bang to the beat of their own drum, find strength in one another, and use this strength to empower their fans through their music. Honestly, it’s hard to believe they’re not even a year into their idol careers, but they are truly worthy of the title of monster rookies. But they aren’t stopping there.
Each member of BVNDIT is always working on improving their already dazzling skill set in a bid to constantly improve every comeback. This work is evident on their YouTube channel, where the members are able to show their individual talents to the world. Most notably, Simyeong has released an exceptional solo dance video to Imagine Dragons’ “Believer” whilst Yiyeon has covered Billie Eilish’s “bad guy” in a sultry music video filled with personality.
Plus, BVNDIT have already taken part in various special stages including an energetic compilation of 2019’s biggest hits at the MGMA Music Awards in August 2019 alongside fellow rookies VERIVERY and Nature, as well as an exceptional cover of Girls’ Generation’s “Genie” during M Countdown’s New Year’s coverage. It is only certain that there is more to come from this fiercely ambitious girl group.
What the future holds for BVNDIT may be uncertain as of now, but it is surely looking bright. This rookie group has already achieved so much and shown just some of the tricks they have hidden up their sleeves, but of course, we know that there is far more to come. This might come from the New.wav project, doing a collaboration with Chungha that would surely be welcomed, or a new essence to their original discography, which could hopefully earn them a well-deserved first win. Whichever way the future may take BVNDIT, it is sure to be ambitious and will absolutely blow us away.
