D1CE Takes a Softer Turn with First Comeback
Leave your expectations at the door, because D1CE has made a major shift from their dark debut. It’s been almost a year since the group debuted and with their first comeback, the group chose to go a different route with a much softer look and sound.
The Title: “Draw You”
The track begins with a soft piano melody before introducing an addicting beat, accompanied by light and airy vocals from the boys that drives home the gentle atmosphere. The overall slower tempo along with the regular breaks in the rhythm to place heavier focus on the underlying piano, along with the softer rap verses, garners a feeling of a gentle mood, much like the feeling of sipping a cup of tea while watching the sunrise while most of the world still sleeps. Where “Wake Up” demanded the listener’s full attention, “Draw You” has a much more benevolent feeling that is very cozy and a perfect break from the intensity of the world.
The music video features prominent use of pastel colorings both in the foreground and background, helping to portray the feeling of softness along with the track. The mixing of pinks, blues, and yellows is extremely pleasing to the eye. This is definitely a cute concept, but rather than the energetic school boy type of image, the boys present a more wholesome and loving air. Some people may not enjoy the more subdued track, but it’s definitely comforting and shows a new side to the rookie group.
The Album
[DRAW YOU : REMEMBER ME] is a six-track mini-album, with four new songs alongside an intro and instrumental version of the title. The intro is particularly subdued, opening softly with a light melody before featuring the sound of footsteps and an opening door. The instrumentals pick up in volume then, shifting into a strings-focused melody that elicits a feeling of calmness in its wake and feeds directly into the title.
“Remember” is the first B-side and maintains the softer atmosphere, making the shift from the title to this track seamless. It has an incredibly similar feel to “Draw You,” though with a bit more of an acoustic influence in the melody. “Another One” maintains the cutesy vibes, but presents a more traditional pop melody and has the type of vibes you’d expect from a title track. Last up is “Be The Light,” an acoustic ballad track that slows down the energy.
All in all, [DRAW YOU : REMEMBER ME] isn’t a bad album by any means, but there isn’t much on it that would stand out to people who are not already fans of the group. The tracks do bring a fresh feeling to the listener, but not much beyond that. Despite that, it’s worth taking a quick listen, if nothing else. Hopefully D1CE will continue to release music on a more frequent basis going forward.
