B-Sides: A Collection from KARD
KARD, the four-member group formed under DSP Media, is among one of the most consistent groups in terms of delighting fans with passionate and enthusiastic music. Along with the fact that they’re the only active co-ed group in the industry, the quartet has their own flavor and aura, making them quite popular among international audiences.
With this month being the group’s third anniversary, we thought it was the perfect time to bring back some of their B-sides this week in celebration.
Don't Recall
“Don’t Recall” is one of the group’s pre-debut tracks which was later included in their first mini-album Hola Hola. With its iconic pop and tropical beats, “Don’t Recall” instantly becomes a favorite on the playlist. The song brings out the bitterness of being deceived by a lover, with the lyrics going back and forth between, “I never want to let you go,” and “Leave me alone, alone, I never want to go back,” highlighting the protagonist’s hesitancy to leave the relationship. The beauty of the song lies in the blend of the co-ed vocals as we get to hear both sides of the story.
Rumor
“Rumor” is another pre-debut track added to their first mini-album. The song is an upbeat track with a similar blend of tropical beats, making it a catchy tune to dance along to. However, the lyrics are not as uplifting as the music, with lines exploring a sense of regret after a break-up. As stated previously, one of the group’s advantages is the perfect blend of female vocals and male rap verses, with “Rumor” further highlighting this strength.
Jinikka
KARD’s second mini-album YOU & ME featured a darker shade of the group as the members appeared more daring. One of the songs from that era, “Jinikka” brings out an intense beat with bold verses. Along with haunting instrumentals, the lyrics are savage and rebellious. “Goodbye. No, I don’t wish you well,” sings BM with the members pleased as they bid farewell to a sick relationship. A rap-dominant track, BM’s deep vocals and rap verses are definitely in the limelight.
Dimelo
The group’s third mini-album, Ride On The Wind, was once again a trend setter as the group switched from a dark to a light, bright concept. The EP was a perfect summer release with upbeat party tracks. Among the peppy songs, “Dimelo” shines due to the fusion of Spanish and Korean lyrics, which was well-received by fans. Featuring more tropical beats, the song instantly transports listeners to a beach party.
Go Baby
“Go Baby” from the group’s latest EP Red Moon begins with a chill beat before evolving into a powerful, catchy song. The group maintains its iconic style with the members once again growing strong and savage in rejecting an unworthy lover. In addition to the track’s addictive chorus, J.Seph and Somin’s parts particularly stand out and pull the listener’s attention. Despite being a break-up song, “Go Baby” is definitely a go-to listen while chilling.
Special Mentions
Inferno
“Inferno,” a special track from rappers J.Seph and BM, might be especially underrated, with its own charm to attract listeners. The song is a proclamation of the group’s success, as the singers take pride in what they have achieved through the years. The song’s lyrics also confess the members’ fear of failure while highlighting the hard work they’ve invested to reach their level of fame. Though the bombastic music may not be a favorite for everybody, the grand instrumentals and pompous verses are what makes the song a self-boosting anthem.
Trust Me
“Trust Me” from the EP You & Me is available in two versions: BM and Somin’s R&B version and J.Seph and Jiwoo’s version with fast-paced verses and drum beats. Though the R&B version remains more popular, the hard-hitting rock version is definitely worthy of a listen. Both versions of the song are well-known B-sides and they continue to retain their place through the years.
