LUNARSOLAR Joins the 2020 Debut Lineup
If you’re looking to support small companies and small groups, you may want to check out the newest girl group from JPlanet Entertainment, LUNARSOLAR! The four-member girl group formed from the company’s rookie project ROOKIE PLANET, which kicked off in 2018 as a promotional tool for their trainees. The four final members are the official graduates of the project, and after the announcement of their debut in July, they have joined the K-Pop ranks with single “OH YA YA YA.”
The Single
There’s a lot of pressure on new girl groups when it comes to their debuts that doesn’t seem to be as intense for their male counterparts. With girl crush concepts generally dominating the market, it was a bit surprising to see the teaser images for “OH YA YA YA” show a cuter concept, especially when the initial debut teaser image was black and white and conveyed a more intense aura. However, with a summer single, listeners come to expect a certain type of upbeat pop sound, and that’s exactly what you’ll find upon first listen. The melody features a driving beat with a touch of Latin influences, a quintessential touch for girl group releases in the summertime. This remains fairly consistent, accompanied by vocal lines, up through the second verse. It takes to this point to hear any rap, so fans of female rappers may not be thrilled with this track as a whole. It is definitely catchy, and there are very few shifts in the melody itself, which is surely playing it safe. There’s a lack of experimentation in the sound, which is likely a calculated move in order to reach a mass audience and not alienate any potential listeners. Better safe than sorry though, right?
The music video for the track is definitely what draws more attention, kicking off with the girls silhouettes in front of a moon that shifts into the sun to match their group name. The light and dark motif continues through the video, with the light side appearing to be accompanied by school girl outfits or pastels while the dark has the girls donned in either black and white or black and neon colors with a more punk aesthetic. The choreography is fairly simple, which isn’t bad but isn’t particularly eye-catching either. Despite that, the track and video definitely grow on you with each listen, and it’ll be interesting to see what the girls have in store for the future.
