E Entertainment’s boy group E’LAST released their third mini-album Dark Dream on September 29. The mini-album contains three brand new tracks and sees the continuation of the storyline the boy group has been building since their debut. The group has had an interesting journey after debuting in the midst of the COVID pandemic, but this release shows that they will let nothing hold them back.

The titular song “Dark Dream” contains the orchestral melodies that have made the group stand out from the beginning. The soundtrack-like instrumentation combined with smooth, rhythmic vocals and consistent underlying synths make this track intense and dramatic. It is a compliment to the fierce beauty of both “Swear” from E’LAST’s debut mini-album Day Dream and “Dangerous” from the mini-album Awake, which precedes this current release.

There are two other songs that accompany “Dark Dream” and are very different in style. R&B-inspired “Muse” is dark and sensual in its expression. The straightforward chorus stating, “You are my muse,” is romantic and bold in a way that one would typically expect from an older group. This track is contrasted by “To.Lie,” a youthful, danceable song written in part by members Wonhyuk and Wonjun. This is especially special because Wonjun has returned to the group after 10 months away, making E’LAST whole once again.

There is technically a fourth track, the instrumental version of “Dark Dream.” This version could be its own stand alone song, simply because it is so masterfully crafted and tells the story without needing words. Dark Dream and the released media that coincidences tell the story of eight princes whose journeys have just begun.
