Throwback Thursday: Your Idol Is Obsessed With This Song
We all know those Western artists who show up on our faves’ playlists without fail. But what about the K-Pop songs they just can’t stop covering? You know the songs, you’ve heard them all before, and yes, your idol loves them too.
“Galaxy” - Bolbbalgan4
In 2016, Bolbbalgan4 was still brand new to the scene, but boy did the then-duo come in swinging. Their song “Galaxy” was covered by nearly every idol that year before going on to win numerous end-of-the-year awards. Back in 2017, the song even dethroned Korea’s all-time favorite “Cherry Blossom Ending” by Busker Busker as the most streamed song in Gaon Chart history. Idols known for covering the song include BTS’s Jungkook, Girls’ Generation’s Seohyun, and DIA’s Jueun and Yebin.
“Through The Night” - IU
IU’s 2017 hit “Through The Night” is a frequent favorite of K-Pop artists and has been covered by some of the industry’s best vocalists such as EXID’s Junghwa, Oh My Girl’s YooA, and Red Velvet’s Wendy. Even with the support of so many big names, it’s not surprising the song landed at the top of the Gaon Chart; we all know IU is the digital queen and her songs are adored by all, including idols.
“Me After You” - Paul Kim
Paul Kim is another go-to for idols, so when he released “Me After You” in 2018, many were quick to offer their own versions of the beloved song. EXO’s Chanyeol, ATEEZ’s Yeosang, and CIX’s Jinyoung and Seunghun are just a few of the artists that covered the track that went on to become Paul Kim’s first ever all-kill on Korean charts.
“You Were Beautiful” - DAY6
DAY6’s “You Were Beautiful” is a regular on Korean charts that’s had plenty of artists cover it since the song’s release in 2017. From WOODZ to Stray Kids’s Seungmin to SF9’s Inseong to even the band’s own close friend soloist Jamie, K-Pop artists just can’t get enough of “You Were Beautiful.” Truth be told, we can’t blame them since the song is so, well, beautiful.
“Phonecert” - 10cm
When it comes to covers, idols need look no further than 10cm’s discography. Released in 2017, their adorably creative song “Phonecert” is the perfect amount of playful for any idol. Whether it’s this fun-loving stage by ASTRO’s Moonbin and Sanha or this endearingly personalized cover by SEVENTEEN’s Hoshi or this beautiful take by fromis_9’s Nagyung, “Phonecert” has something for everyone.
