[Interview] Get to Know More about Rising Soloist AleXa!
Exploding onto the scene with seemingly non-stop promotions since her debut in 2019, AleXa is still going strong, only this time with a twist. Up until now, most of her releases have been upbeat dance tracks, but the singer has recently released her very first ballad! Check out the interview below to see her thoughts on the process and many other topics. Aren’t you curious?
Q: If you had to pick a color to describe yourself, what would it be and why?
A: Blue. While it’s associated with sadness and melancholy, it is also the color of the sky, the sea, and other beautiful things. Humans can’t always be happy and they can’t always be sad; the color blue is just that.
Q: How does it feel to release your very first ballad track in Korea? What was the hardest part for you during this whole process? Was there anything different about releasing this in comparison to your more intense dance tracks?
A: I’m very happy to have released a song such as “Never Let You Go” because it shows the diversity of AleXa’s range, both sonically and emotionally. The hardest part was trying a different singing technique—my title tracks are primarily very vivacious and in-your-face, so having to tune into a softer sound was a challenge.
Q: What are some challenges you face? How do you overcome these challenges?
A: I’d say my top challenge would be self-care. Whether it’s getting enough sleep, remembering to eat, or even remembering to maintain my eyebrows—sometimes you get so busy that you forget things like self-care. Overcoming forgetful habits is a wee bit tricky, but when I have a few hours to myself, if I remember to, I’ll catch up on everything I’ve neglected.
Q: As of last year, you became a podcast host for “How Did I Get Here?” with Jae of DAY6. What are your thoughts on being a podcaster? What are the things you like and dislike about it?
A: It’s a great deal of fun being on HDIGH with a friend like Jae. I’m someone who enjoys talking, so a podcast is ideal. It’s always an interesting time when we record because of our dynamic. Not to mention, I always learn something new with each episode!! There’s nary a single dislike I can think of—only positives!
Q: What has your go-to music been lately? Any favorite TV shows or movies?
A: Lately it’s been the “Beetlejuice” musical soundtrack. I swear, it’s on repeat nearly every day—I am SO in love with the show. As for things like movies or TV, I recently stumbled across a movie that I saw with my friends back in 2018 during my brief trip home. Maquia: When The Promised Flower Blooms. It’s such a beautiful movie, the animation is sublime and the characters are very lovable. You will cry if you watch it, I guarantee.
Q: In 2020 you were nominated for three awards, all of which you won! How did that make you feel? Is there any pressure on you now because you’ve won those awards?
A: Ah, yes!! Winning three awards last year was such a great honor—never in my wildest dreams could I have foreseen it happening. I was so grateful to receive them, and more so grateful to our wonderful staff that made everything possible. I will say, having three awards under my belt, I can only aspire to work harder to achieve higher awards for myself and our team in the future.
Q: If you could collaborate with any other artist, who would it be? What kind of content would it be and why?
A: In the K-Pop realm, doing ANYTHING with HyunA would be a dream come true. She is a senior that I have admired for so long—she is my blueprint, haha. Whether it would be a stage, a song, or content of any kind, if there EVER comes a time where we could collaborate, I would be elated.
Q: Are you, by any chance, taking part in the creative process of your music or music in general? Are you currently composing songs or writing any lyrics for future releases? If not, would that be something you’d be interested in doing in the future?
A: I do toplining in my spare time. I’ve been wanting to learn how to compose, and a few friends of mine have offered to teach me, but I haven’t started yet. I write lyrics quite frequently, at least a couple songs every month, or so. Whether the songs I topline or the lyrics I write will ever make it on an album or not, who knows~
Q: What can you tell us about the “Project PARTS” series you’re starting with this latest release?
A: To summarize it, “Project Parts” will be a side project in the AleXaVerse that focuses on the more human side of AleXa. “Never Let You Go” being the first edition with ‘AleXa H,' for "heart." In my personal hopes, this “H” chapter will expand to not only soft, sweet, and sentimental emotions, but also those of deep sadness, fury, and rage—humans have quite a broad range of emotions in their hearts.
