EVERGLOW Ups the Ante in Latest Comeback

EVERGLOW came out to slay in this new comeback! Seven months after their last comeback and some complications with COVID-19 (Sihyeon and Yiren tested positive but have recovered), the girls are back in full force with a Hollywood-style, action-packed comeback in “FIRST” and accompanying single album Last Melody.

“FIRST”

Diverting away from the ‘80s inspired concept in “LA DI DA,” “FIRST” takes on a more modern hip-hop influence. The track opens up with an epic orchestra line reminiscent of a movie soundtrack before the main electronic melodic line comes in and introduces the vocals. The beat has strong hip-hop influences with more emphasis on the rap verses. The beat is rather overpowering, so the vocals are a bit overshadowed. Despite that, it is a powerful beat that becomes more addictive with each listen, even if it is a bit off-putting at the start. It stands in stark contrast to the previous comeback and shows a more epic side to EVERGLOW.

The music video is what has everyone talking. The futuristic scenery complements the epic tone of the song, with some shots strongly reminiscent of the Transformers franchise. There is also a heavy emphasis on performance with every shot focusing on the choreography. The choreography definitely deserves the spotlight, with powerful and bold moves taking center stage and demanding the viewer’s attention. The sharpness of the movements really helps EVERGLOW stand out, since a lot of the choreography we see for girl groups doesn’t tend to go so hard. The composition was surely created to be eye-catching, and it definitely succeeded on that front.

The single album comes with three tracks, the B-sides exploring completely different musical styles. “DON’T ASK DON’T TELL” has a distinct TWICE feel with a driving, groovy melody and brighter tone than the title. In contrast, “PLEASE PLEASE” is a soft, vocal-focused ballad with a hint of melancholy. With three distinct tracks in the single album, EVERGLOW explores a myriad of different genres and proves their versatility.
