BM Shows Us the Bright Light at the End of Our Inner Fights in His Solo Debut

KARD’s BM finally made his highly anticipated solo debut with the emotional digital single “Broken Me.”

While I knew his solo debut would be obviously distinguishable from KARD’s style, “Broken Me” sounds different from what I expected—but not in a bad way. For some reason, I was waiting for something more hip-hop and R&B infused from BM, but I was pleasantly surprised by the rock-base of his official solo debut. “Broken Me” has a strong but not overpowering melody that nicely balances out what the song has to say. The track was written and composed by BM himself alongside 8PEX Company’s co-CEOs and producers, and takes us back to the artist’s worries during his trainee years.

“Broken Me” portrays the suffocating inner fights we all experience within ourselves at some points in our lives. The lyrics also talk about the way we hide our anxiety and pain from the world which makes us feel alone, but when we reach the bridge, we realize we can get through this: “Tired of being broken in the cold / Trying to find a way to let it go / Know I'll find a way to let it go.”

Instead of “him” or “BM”, I used “we” as the subject because I found everything about it way too relatable. It could come as a surprise to see the always fun and humorous artist talk about anxiety and pain, but it just proves that we all have our own struggles to go through, even if we hide it from the world. And although this topic can easily take a very lethargic turn, I’m glad more and more artists are opening up and creating honest music about their true feelings. It is probably not easy for them either, but it can help ease the listener’s mind by basically showing them that they are not alone in this. With the music and the bright light at the bridge, “Broken Me” somehow still becomes a song that is easy to listen to, perfect for a summer drive or a long beach walk by yourself.

The music video created by VIVE STUDIOS—who also made BTS’s SUGA’s iconic virtual appearance happen during the Mnet Asian Music Awards in 2020—has a very high-quality production, with frames that could tell the whole story even if they were just still images. It’s dark, grungy, and painful, matching the emotions of the lyrics very well. The video also features actor Park Eunseok, who is currently playing in the megahit K-drama The Penthouse. These scenes are actually cuts from VIVE STUDIOS own short film, The Brave New World starring the popular actor. “Broken Me” will also appear as the OST of the short.
