WEi Shows Musical Maturity with IDENTITY : Action
WEi’s second comeback of 2021, IDENTITY : Action, continues their pattern of starkly contrasting title tracks. As their third release overall, fans are now beginning to get a sense for what WEi is capable of, and title track “BYE BYE BYE” confirms that what we’ve seen thus far is only the tip of the iceberg.
“BYE BYE BYE”
For their first summer release, “BYE BYE BYE” delivers an appropriate warmth and air of freedom. With respect to previous title tracks “TWILIGHT” and “All or Nothing,” “BYE BYE BYE” is comparatively playful with its fun dance-pop production and lyrics that advocate for leaving the past in the past.
Members Donghan and Seokhwa enter with warm hair colors that blend in perfectly with the aesthetics of the music video, which is set in both a tropical resort pool area and an airplane runway. The recurring image of objects floating out of the members’ hands—and Yohan just throwing a glass of water over his shoulder—lends a visual representation of the song’s lyrics that demand willingness to let go and live vigorously without regret.
As is common for summertime music videos, “BYE BYE BYE” is packed with bright colors, from the members’ hair to the bold pinks and yellows throughout the set, and that juxtaposition with WEi’s model-like visuals makes for an eye-catching—if a little repetitive—viewing experience.
IDENTITY : Action
This mini-album contains five tracks total, and it’s a well-rounded little assortment. “White Light” and “RUi” are relatively slow songs, the latter of which is a love note directly to fans. “BYE BYE BYE” and “Ocean” have pop influences in common and they're equally fun to listen to, along with the slightly more hip-hop influenced “Waitin’.”
What’s most notable about this comeback is the differences among all three title track music videos; with only three releases, WEi has shown a wide range in visuals and musical directions, leaving us already waiting for more.
