MAMAMOO Returns With The Soaring Ballad, “Where Are We Now”
The vocal queens of K-Pop, MAMAMOO are back with the short and simple new album, WAW, short for “Where Are We.” While the mini-album only contains four tracks including the title track “Where Are We Now,” the project is one of their most beautiful. For the first time, MAMAMOO opts to perform a ballad as their title track.
The girl group, who will soon celebrate their seventh debut anniversary, takes a look back at their personal and professional lives on “Where Are We Now,” as they are unsure of what their future might hold. The track is supported by a beautiful piano melody and string instruments, with MAMAMOO’s angelic vocals on full display. The girls perform the song in simple light-colored outfits, including beautiful white gowns. The music video is dimly lit, conveying the sincere message of the song.
The B-sides on the album are also ballads with “내일의 너, 오늘의 나 (Another Day)” expressing the feeling of how they have to prepare themselves before saying goodbye to their loved one because it is painful to do so. Co-written by member Moonbyul, “애써 (A Memory for Life)” features a slow-burning guitar and finds the girls singing about how hard it is to erase harsh memories in life. The digital version of the album closes with Part 2 of their Queendom finale song, “우린 결국 다시 만날 운명이었지 (Destiny).” Unlike the first part which had an upbeat anthem, the new part flows on a piano melody and features sad, yet hopeful lyrics. The physical version of the album contains an additional track titled “분명 우린 그때 좋았었어 (Happier than Ever)” that expresses their joy of being together as a group through all these years.
After a year of explosive pop bangers, MAMAMOO tones it down and once again shows their versatility. The group has always been known for their powerful vocal performance, but with WAW, the ladies put all the focus on their emotional lyrics and harmonious delivery without any distractions.
