Girl’s Day and the “Something” Comeback

On January 3, 2014, Girl’s Day released their fourth mini-album Girl’s Day Everyday #3 and the music video for title track “Something.” The mini-album features four tracks and an instrumental version of “Something.” Two days after the release, Dream T Entertainment posted a concept photo video on the official Girl’s Day YouTube channel, with B-side “Show you” playing in the background. Rather than going with an overtly sexy concept or a bubblegum pop flavor, the concept video reveals a sensual and mature side of Girl’s Day.

The Music Video

The music video for “Something” opens with each of the four members receiving a phone call before cutting to scenes of the girls dancing in a golden-lit mirrored hallway. In terms of a plot, the focus of the music video is mostly on the choreography, though we do get scenes that seem to hint at a plot, like Minah in the hotel room with a video camera, Sojin sitting in a red sports car, Hyeri painting her toenails, and Yura sitting alone. The main choreography moments are in an alleyway with a neon light behind them displaying the song title, the group’s name, and an image of fingers up to a mouth in a “shh” gesture, resemblant of the Girl’s Day Everyday #3 album cover.

Girl’s Day also released a dance version of the “Something” music video two weeks later.

The Comeback Performance

Girl’s Day had their comeback for “Something” on Music Core on January 4, 2014. The girl group wore the black outfits seen in the music video while their backup dancers wore similar outfits but in white. The stage set didn’t resemble any scenes from the music video, but rather had this intricate semicircle display with a red lace-like pattern over a white transparent pane. The transparent pane changed colors depending on the lights behind it, giving the performance a kind of Chicago or showgirl vibe.

The Legacy

Girl’s Day earned six music show wins for “Something.” The first came on Show Champion on January 8, 2014, with the other five wins coming from Show Music Core, two from Inkigayo, and two from M!COUNTDOWN.

Girl’s Day Everyday #3 peaked at No. 4 on the Gaon Weekly Albums Chart, No. 12 on the Gaon Monthly Albums Chart, and No. 77 on the Gaon Yearly Albums Chart. “Something” peaked at No. 2 on the Gaon Weekly Digital Chart, No. 2 on the Gaon Weekly Download Chart, No. 1 on the Gaon Weekly Streaming Chart, and No. 9 on the Billboard U.S. World Digital Song Sales Chart. None of the B-sides from the album charted.

At the year-end awards ceremonies, “Something” and Girl’s Day were nominated and won quite a lot. Girl’s Day won “Popularity Award” at the Asian Model Festival Awards and “Cable TV Star” at the Cable TV Star Awards in 2014. They also won “Song of the Year (January)” at the 2015 Gaon Chart Music Awards and “Digital Bonsang” at the 2015 Golden Disc Awards for “Something.” The girl group was nominated for “Top 10” and “Artist of the Year” while title track “Something” was nominated for “Music Video Award” and “Song of the Year” at the MelOn Music Awards, but Girl’s Day only took home the “Top 10” award from that ceremony.

At the Mnet Asian Music Awards, Girl’s Day won “Best Dance Performance by a Female Group” for “Something,” but they were also nominated for “Best Female Group,” “BC - UnionPay Artist of the Year,” and “BC - UnionPay Song of the Year” for “Something.” Girl’s Day were nominated for “Popularity Award” and “Hallyu Special Award” at the Seoul Music Awards, but only took home the trophy for “Bonsang Award” for “Something.”

“Something” is still frequently covered by other idols on variety shows or during concerts, including members of B1A4, MOMOLAND, BTS, and GOT7, while Minho of SHINee, Suho of EXO, Changmin of TVXQ, and Kyuhyun of Super Junior performed a special version of the track during an SMTOWN concert.
