"Step Back” as GOT the beat Makes Explosive Debut
At long last, a super group of SMTOWN (SM Entertainment)’s female artists has arrived. Housed under the music project group Girls On Top (GOT), GOT the beat brings the heat by combining some of the biggest names in SM in a spicy and charismatic single titled, “Step Back.” Girls On Top aims to have multiple female-oriented project groups that will display an array of styles and concepts that will be composed of different female artists within the label. GOT the beat is the first of many potential project groups to come from SMTOWN.
BoA, Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon and Hyoyeon, Red Velvet’s Seulgi and Wendy, and aespa’s Winter and Karina all come together to bring the house down and take no prisoners. Get ready to fall under the spell of these seven ladies in one of the most anticipated super girl groups in K-Pop.
For quite some time, there were many talks among fans of when SMTOWN would create a super group similar to SuperM. Not long after the Christmas holiday in 2021, teasers began spreading like wildfire, building the anticipation of GOT the beat. Fans simply could not contain their excitement, especially with the member lineup for the super group. For the first time ever, legendary and veteran soloist BoA is seen in a lineup for a girl group. Just like their brother group, this super girl group is filled with heavy hitters ranging in rap, vocals, dance, and visuals. There is no stone left unturned when it comes to GOT the beat, and “Step Back” does not fall short in comparison.
In the lead up to their release, it was announced that the girl group would take the stage for their debut in the second annual ‘SMTOWN LIVE 2022’ SMCU EXPRESS @ KWANGYA, which is a free online concert from all the groups and artists within the record label on New Year’s Day. Followed shortly after their special stage, their single “Step Back” was released on all streaming platforms. While there is no official music video for the group (yet), the stage performance of the song is enough to grab one’s attention and leave a lasting impression. By focusing on the stage itself, fans across fandoms get to see each member shine in their vocals and through the choreography.
“Step Back” is very much in the realm of experimentation as it features a blend of hip-hop and R&B with layers of sound bites from a choir/opera group and bass throughout that create a high-energy and catchy single.
