Throwback Thursday: Sweet Treat

Enjoy some savory sounds with these foodie-inspired selections for this week's Throwback Thursday.

“Sunny Side Up! ” - Red Velvet

This Red Velvet B-side stands out for many reasons, but especially as a complete 180 from the experimental roller coaster that was the title track, “Zimzalabim.” The melody is unconventional, with amazing harmonies from the members throughout that elevate the track to another level.

“Jam Jam ” - IU

IU always expands her musical sound beyond simply ballads and the gentle music she may be associated with. Palette is an excellent album for this reason, with many songs that still retain her recognizable personality, but also venture to new realms. This clip from IU’s 2017 Palette tour portrays this dichotomy perfectly, transitioning beautifully from the album’s opener “dlwlrma” to the sultry, uptempo “Jam Jam.” The bridge, “Jam, Sugar, Love,” is subtle in its innuendo and sweet like its namesake.

“아이스크림 Ice Cream” - f(x)

It’s hard to listen to “Ice Cream” and not have, “Milkshake, milkshake, to be honest, I’m ice cream, ice cream, vanilla ice cream,” stuck in your head for days on end. This track from f(x)’s NU ABO is incredibly catchy, sounding like the quintessential girl group track from the early 2010s.

“PIZZA ” - OOHYO

Although this track isn't technically “K-Pop,” as it is sung entirely in English, we couldn't possibly leave out this “sad girl summer” bop. OOHYO shares how pizza just isn’t the same when you’re missing someone you love or a significant other. The lyrics definitely strike a chord if you’ve ever endured a summer slump rife with teenage angst.

“CREAM ” - EXID

Aside from their super popular title tracks, EXID B-sides can’t be ignored. “Cream” features all five members, with a sensual opening that jumps into the house-influenced chorus. Enjoy this official clip from the group's first fanmeet, with a nice visual of the choreography for this track.

“STRAWBERRY” - TWICE

TWICE’s FANCY YOU era was unforgettable, with some memorable B-sides that gained acclaim alongside the mega-hit title track, “FANCY.” One track in particular was the sugary sweet closer, “STRAWBERRY.” Member Chaeyoung was praised for her work in writing the lyrics for this song, which was practically an open secret among ONCE with her known love of the fruit.
