Rolling Quartz Unveils First Album, Fighting
The moment that Diadem has waited for is finally here! Female K-Rock band Rolling Quartz finally unveiled their first mini-album titled Fighting, filled with studio versions of familiar tracks originating from their YouTube demo clips and song covers. In addition to their first album, Rolling Quartz also uploaded a music video in homage to Dreamcatcher’s incandescent single "GOOD NIGHT.”
Rolling Quartz originally debuted on December 30, 2020 with their immensely thrilling single “Blaze.” Before their debut, Rolling Quartz covered a number of popular songs in a variety of genres to showcase their creative and expressive arrangement styles in a sound that truly defines them: rock. The band has played multiple online concerts since their debut amidst the pandemic, providing a space for them to meet their fanbase Diadem online while performing their tracklist of demos that were exclusive to YouTube. In one of their previous online concerts on September 4, 2021, Rolling Quartz announced that an album was coming soon, leading to the long-awaited release of their first mini-album, Fighting.
In Fighting, four out of the six songs are original tracks that were previously released on YouTube between 2020 and 2021: “Delight,” “Holler,” “Rock’n’roll Paradise,” and “Higher.” The other two singles are covers of the songs “GOOD NIGHT” by Dreamcatcher and “Azalea” by Maya.
Their music video for “Good Night” pays homage and respect to Dreamcatcher's extraordinary and imaginative original single. As stated in the description of their YouTube video, their take on the song focuses on “trying to gain a sixth sense using the five human senses.” It's very apparent based on the various artistic and metaphorical portrayals of the human senses. Aside from the imagery, Rolling Quartz's stage presence throughout the music video is outstanding; they are highly capable and skilled in grabbing your attention, whether it’s through a live performance or pre-recorded video.
When it comes to covering singles by other artists, Rolling Quartz has succeeded in taking a twist on a variety of genres—pop, classic rock, and K-Pop. In comparison to their covers on YouTube, the studio versions of “Good Night” and “Azalea” add nuances like raspier vocals suitable for the rock sound, their artistic style of arrangement, and growing stage presence as seen through their various online concerts. Jayoung’s timbre provides a uniquely dark and evocative experience paired with her bandmate’s phenomenal musical performance. While you cannot deny that their intimate online concerts offered a distinct experience in comparison to solely audio, the striking fiery passion they're known for remains through studio versions, if not even more elevated than before. Even with their original songs, the studio versions give a clean and crisper sound to the original demos, heightening the strong energy and bold emotions you feel when listening to Rolling Quartz.
What’s more, Rolling Quartz’s K-Rock style is attracting rock fans from all over the world, allowing former or older rock fans to connect with an all-female K-Rock band that can do it all. Considering where they began, Rolling Quartz is deserving to excel and become the next big thing in the K-Rock genre and beyond.
