Soyou and Junggigo on "Some" Relationships

Singers Soyou and Junggigo give us the perfect soundtrack for complicated situationships with the romantic ballad “Some.”

Those moments after falling for someone and just before making a relationship official can be filled with doubt and anxiety. Not quite a couple but not just friends either, these relationships became known as “somes.” On February 6, 2014, singers Junggigo and SISTAR’s Soyou, along with LILBOI from the rap duo Geeks, came together to voice those push-and-pull frustrations in the song “Some.”

The digital single came to be after veteran singer Junggigo joined Starship Entertainment under their independent sub-label Starship X. The previous year, Soyou and rapper Mad Clown topped the charts with the song “Stupid In Love,” and with its success, the company seemed to continue trying their hand with idol group singers and indie artist collaborations.

“Some” was considered a K-Pop dream collaboration, not only with its vocalists but also with a production team that included producer Kim Dohoon and lyricist Min Yeonjae. Both penned hits for a number of groups like BTS, SHINee, MAMAMOO, and AOA. Starship also brought on music video producers ZANYBROS, who have directed videos for various artists since 2008 and are known as some of the most influential video producers in the K-Pop industry.

The music video for “Some” stars B1A4 rapper Baro as an air pilot who gathers up the courage to ask out the woman he likes, played by Soyou’s groupmate Dasom. As the video goes on, the pair play hard to get in text messages, contrasting their excitement as they get dressed up and run to meet one another. While keeping the feeling of watching a romantic drama, the video is also whimsical with moments of teddy bears coming to life to fight the couple as they try to meet.

Soyou and Junggigo debuted “Some” on M!COUNTDOWN on the same day as its release on streaming platforms. The stage turned into a set resembling the music video, including white-colored chairs, lamps, and stuffed animals for Soyou’s side of the set and earth-toned lights and tables for Junggigo’s side. The two sang longingly while appearing to view each other from opposite sides of a picture frame that separated them.

Despite what Soyou once described as unenthusiastic audience reaction to the first performance, “Some” topped six music charts within a day of its release and stayed at top of the MelOn Top100 Chart for seven straight weeks. Soyou and Junggigo won 11 music show awards for the single and the song was ranked No. 21 on MelOn’s “Top 100 Songs of the Decade.”

The success of “Some” also brought various degrees of success to all those involved, including lyricist Min Yeonjae, who was recruited by YG Entertainment. Soyou and Junggigo continued to enjoy popularity as soloists, with magazine features and collaborations with artists such as Beenzino and Urban Zakapa. They wrapped up the year winning a total of 22 awards, including “Digital Single of the Year” at the Seoul Music Awards.
