Pocket Girls' 2017 Hit "Oppa is Trash" Goes Viral

Everybody loves a good comeback story, especially when an underrated hit from years ago gains sudden popularity online. We saw it happen last year with Brave Girls, but this time around, a different 2017 track is making the rounds on social media and attracting the attention of everyone who encountered a specific post online.

A few days ago, Twitter user @haetanothaetae posted a tweet talking about a song that was overheard at their gym. That song was none other than Pocket Girls' iconic and comedically memorable single “Oppa is Trash.” In their tweet, they wrote, “Our gym has a lot of strange songs ... Today [this song] came on, and the men on the equipment were startled and started looking around,” with a clip of the music video attached to it.

Since sharing online, the tweet has garnered over 28,000 retweets, with many writing about their amazement that the single is getting recognition. With thousands of tweets flooding in with fans new and old all over the world talking about the single, it's definitely a track everyone needs to hear.

Sung by members Yeonji, Habin, ChaeA, and Michae at the time, the 2017 single is best known for its straightforward lyrics that many online are calling “deep and meaningful” in a comedic way, of course. The EDM track talks about a cheating man lying to his girlfriend and asking to break up. By expressing their hatred towards the cheating man, the girls sing, “Oppa is a baby,” and, “Oppa is trash,” which has and will continue to go down in history for its memorable lyrics. Denouncing the cheating man’s ways and airing him out by comparing him to trash while pointing at various things labeled “trash” to prove the point is truly fitting with the context nowadays towards women’s experiences dating awful men in the world. The lyrics brought creative word plays on Korean terms "babe" (애기) and "garbage" (쓰레기), creating the new word "garbabe" (쓸애기). It will surely become your favorite track and video by the end of it.

Thanks to its recent virality online, the music video for the single recently crossed over 700,000 views, bringing an exponential increase in views over the last few days. Considering the group debuted in 2015, the recent attention and impact is now going down in history in 2022.

Even though Pocket Girls is not currently promoting at the moment and have gone through various lineup changes since 2017, we hope that this viral recognition of the single brings them great joy as they reminisce on their single from nearly five years ago. Needless to say, these girls truly deserve to have their moment considering how beloved it is online for its unforgettable and relatable lyrics.
