Eunhyuk's Birthday B-Sides
Happy Birthday to Eunhyuk! Super Junior’s main rapper and main dancer (and my SuJu bias) turned 36 today (April 4). So, in celebration of his birthday, let’s take a look at some B-sides that Eunhyuk has released, or performed, solo over the last few years.
"Illusion (Obsessed)"
“Illusion (Obsessed)” is Eunhyuk’s solo track from Bout You, the second mini-album from Super Junior sub-unit Super Junior-D&E released in 2018. This song is dark yet seductive, with a hip-hop style that highlights a different side to Eunhyuk as a rapper. The composition of the backing track, with the piano, echo sound effects, and whispers, creates somewhat of a haunting vibe that adds to the dark and seductive style of the song. Although mostly rap-focused, Eunhyuk does tease us with his singing voice with small, soft, sections of the song before continuing to deliver his fierce, dark style with each addictive and bold chorus and verse. Eunhyuk might say he’s “not obsessed” in this song, but after listening to “Illusion (Obsessed),” you most definitely will be.
"Today More Than Yesterday"
Although an incredible rapper and dancer, Eunhyuk is also a great vocalist whose vocals are rarely noticed outside of Super Junior and the ELF fandom. “Today More Than Yesterday” is a hidden gem from Eunhyuk’s OST for Lotte Duty Free’s 2018 webdrama Secret Queen Makers, that starred Super Junior bandmate and leader Leeteuk, EXO members Sehun and Chanyeol, and 2PM maknae Chansung among a few other well-established Hallyu singers and actors. This song carries a sweet and romantic pop vibe as Eunhyuk sings with a soft-melodic voice that is miles away from the powerful and intense rap we’re all used to hearing from him. Although quite a hidden track, “Today More Than Yesterday” happened to win Eunhyuk the “Hall Of Fame OST Award” at the 2019 The Fact Music Awards.
"Red Muhly"
With Eunhyuk known for his talents as a main rapper and dance machine, “Red Muhly” is another track that allows him to showcase his vocal versatility and ability when it comes to singing. With K-R&B and K-Hip-Hop artist Colde contributing as one of the song's composers, “Red Muhly'' is a song that oozes this R&B and laid back vibe with a ‘mid-tempo range, cozy synthesizers and bouncing synth bass’ that completely catches you off guard, especially when coming from a Super Junior or Super Junior-D&E listening session. The track allows Eunhyuk to strip back and provide a softer, calmer approach to music as opposed to his more energetic, fierce, and sometimes comedic, style that he is loved and known for. With lyrics exclusively written by Eunhyuk, “Red Muhly” serves as the B-side track to his 2021 single be.
