Woosung Is Back With New EP MOTH

Woosung has come to be known for many things, one of them being his raspy vocals. His voice can effortlessly mold to fit any genre he decides to explore in his music. His newest EP MOTH showcases this. Released on May 13, the EP consists of four new songs from the artist, some of which he performed on tour as the opener for Epik High at the beginning of the year.

With his fellow band members from The Rose completing their military enlistments, Woosung has used the time to explore his solo work further. He released his album Genre at the end of 2021, and now with MOTH, Woosung explores his creativity more as an artist and brings thought-provoking meaning to his music. “Phase Me,” the lead track for the EP, is a rock track with the message of not letting the actions of an ex-lover phase you. With an anti-drop of a chorus, his raspy vocals blend with the guitar and bass, creating a sound that instantly hooks you.

The other three tracks offer us a similar yet different mix of rock, indie, and pop. The opening track "ComE dOWn" is an indie track mixed with synth sounds that give off a euphoric vibe. We then go into "Sounds Effects (feat. Satica)," with its deep base and indie-rock sounds suiting both of the artists' vocals well. The ending song, "Modern Life," is the soft starting rock tune that comes to a headbanging crescendo at the chorus, with relatable lyrics about social media and life.

As a whole, the album tells a story of self-discovery, with many of the songs' lyrics mentioning butterflies and moths. The two creatures are also prevalent in the concept photos for the album and the music video for "Phase Me," where the eeriness and darkness often associated with moths are portrayed. We see it as Woosung bares moth wings during the second part of the video and the contrasts in his moods between scenes. These images further exemplify the meaning of his songs and how Woosung carefully and intentionally planned out this concept of beautiful butterflies versus undesirable moths.

MOTH is a beautiful display of Woosung as an evolving artist who continues to play around with his sound and is unafraid to get deep with his music. You can listen to MOTH here.
