Friendsgiving B-Sides

Last weekend, we celebrated Chuseok in Korea, which in theory is comparable to Thanksgiving. The background and traditions are vastly different, but both holidays are spent enjoying delicious food with your loved ones. Since I don’t have family in Korea, I opted to spend time with my friends resting and celebrating the start of fall. That’s why I’m dedicating this week’s B-sides to my dear friends as we break down some of their all-time favorite tracks.

“ROYAL” – IVE

LOVE DIVE was released in April 2022 as IVE’s second single album, featuring a total of two tracks. The first is the popular title track of the same name, and the second is “ROYAL.” Out of the two, “ROYAL” might be lesser known by the general public, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less catchy. The lyrics are confident and encourage listeners to adopt a similar mindset with reminders like “What’s important to you is always be yourself.” The six member group from Starship Entertainment is nothing short of elegant as they show off strong vocals and practiced harmonies. With a fun chorus and catchy beat, one listen will surely have you feeling like royalty.

“Get Up” – NewJeans

NewJeans are known for their triple title track approach, leaving very few true B-Sides in the girl group’s lineup. Of these few tracks, one of their best comes from the group’s second EP of the same name. “Get Up” is only 36 seconds in length, but its composition along with the members’ angelic vocals make it stand out as more than a simple transition piece. The short lyrics urge a lover to be more proactive in showing their feelings, stating “Meet me back in five if I matter.” While I personally wish the song was longer, it’s easy to see why ADOR felt the importance of including it on the album. In the current social media climate, shorter is better, and “Get Up” is the perfect length for TikTok challenges and aesthetic Instagram reels.

“Silent Cry” — Stray Kids

Stray Kids released their second full-length album, Noeasy, in 2021. The fourteen-track album is a blend of various genres and hit songs. Placed in the middle is “Silent Cry,” a heartfelt track with comforting lyrics, reminding listeners it’s okay to not be okay. The composition contrasts these lyrics with an upbeat melody in typical Stray Kids fashion. Nevertheless, the eight-member group delivers their encouraging message with passionate vocals and precise rap. They promise listeners, “Just lean on me, 'cause I won't let you go,” making it a special B-side to Stays everywhere all around the world.
