CRAXY Won’t Bow Down to Haters in “NUGUDOM”
CRAXY is back with a vengeance this Spring. You might think they’re sweet with the elegant backdrop of a grand piano, bright lights, and blushing flowers, but don’t let their fake persona fool you. Released on March 23, 2023, XX is composed of eight ballad, dance, and pop tracks featuring one important message: don’t mess with CRAXY because they’re in control now. The fourth generation of K-Pop has not had it easy. Idols are getting younger and training is getting harder, but they're striving to take back power–and that’s exactly what the group wanted to convey in “NUGUDOM.” 1000 (D_answer), BORAN, Kevin D, and Luzy (Party in My Pool) teamed up to compose the title track, released the same day as the album, that samples “Por Una Cabeza” from the movie Scent of a Woman combined with an electronic dance-pop theme.
“NUGUDOM” could be interpreted as “whose kingdom is it?” And we think you know the answer. The title is derived from the Korean word “누구” (nugu, who) and the English word “kingdom.” But the most popular definition is “to be dominant,” who’s topping the charts? CRAXY didn’t always have the fame and fandom they have now. From a rocky debut with “My Universe” to achieving overnight fame with “Aria” because of its unique concept, the girl group was once considered a “nugu group,” the real meaning behind the title. The term is used by international fans to describe an unknown group or one that hasn’t yet won an award, but CRAXY show that you don’t need an award to exert power.
In a country where anyone can send in an audition tape or get recruited in the street and become a trainee, it’s hard to figure out where you stand or if you’re even allowed to have your own stance. Your position is chosen for you, all you know is competition, and it’s overnight success or an uncertain future. In a technologically advanced world that surrounds itself with a music and dance uprising called K-Pop, it’s hard to shine as an individual. You might win now, but not next time. Or another group always wins, but at least you’re nominated. You’ll never be the favorite member because there are 10 others better than you. You’re always trying to improve, but you’re never good enough.
But CRAXY want you know that you are worthy. You’ve got gut. Variety. Dexterity. Talent. Connections. And you’ve got a strong personality that shuns hate. Even if you never reach the top and you’re looked down on, it’s important not to lose yourself. Stay determined and do your best to achieve your dream because you’re already halfway there. Without that original idea, you wouldn’t be where you are today, so why would you give that up? They prove that something traditional or conventional can be modernized, so stand out from the crowd and embrace your true self.
