The Fourth Gen’s Favorite Rock Band

The Korean music industry has tackled many genres, and the one that sticks the most is pop…but what about rock? The fourth generation tried out a new sound, and I as well as many other people enjoy it. With the release of their third mini-album coming soon, let's take a dive and get to know the undeniably talented K-Rock group Xdinary Heroes.

Who is Xdinary Heroes?

Under JYP Entertainment's sub-label STUDIO J, the six-member rock band Xdinary Heroes debuted on December 6, 2021 with their single release “Happy Death Day.” The group is made up of Gunil, Jungsu, Gaon, O.de, Jun Han, and Jooyeon. Each member plays an instrument, which might be new to most fourth generation fans.

Before their debut, the members were introduced individually through videos titled “Origin of Xdinary Heroes,” which also introduced fans to the storyline concept the group would be following. Along with introduction videos came fantastic videos where each member performed a solo on their instrument. After these videos were released, it was clear the boys were about to bring something big to the fourth generation.

With the release of “Happy Death Day,” the group experienced their first ever high charting week. Just a week after their debut, “Happy Death Day” peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales Chart. The song touched on the idea of people only showing care when it's beneficial, and the group expressed that well through the bright and futuristic concept of the video. The music video currently sits at 23 million views, making it their most streamed.

After the release of their debut single, the group released two mini-albums: Hello, world! and Overload. Both showcase the rock talent each member holds. The two title tracks on both albums have music videos that carry on the same futuristic concept that was teased in their debut introductions. “Test Me” and “Haircut” instrumentals are also included in the albums, and being able to hear the production value and each instrument showcased in the songs make the group so much cooler.

While the group is known for their debut single, they are also widely known for their own renditions of very popular K-Pop and K-Rock songs. I might be biased here, but my favorite has to be their cover of DAY6’s “Zombie.” The Heroes use their instruments in a passion-filled way, which reminds me of DAY6, and loops in listeners to want to get to know them more.

Another one of their famous covers is EXO's “LOVE ME RIGHT.” Hearing a different sound from the actual genre helps shape the listener’s expectations for the group. From hearing Jooyeon on bass showcasing his insanely talented vocals to Jungsu harmonizing with his keyboard, the group is sure to leave an impression.

We’re about a week out from their new release and expectations are high, but knowing Xdinary Heroes, all will be met and exceeded. Until the release of “Freakin’ Bad” and their third mini-album Deadlock, continue streaming their past releases and check out their covers.
