J.Fla Reflects On Her Music Career Through Her Album Burn The Flower
Returning with her first full-length album, J.Fla is ready to reintroduce herself with album Burn The Flower. The singer-songwriter first started gaining popularity through her YouTube channel, gaining 17 million subscribers who support each song cover uploaded.
We found out more about the artist as J.Fla opened up about where her love for music originally began and talked about what fans can expect to hear on this album.
Q: For people who may be new to your work, could you introduce yourself?
Hello, I am J.Fla, an artist actively pursuing music in Korea.
Q: As many people know you for your famous covers, do you feel any pressure at all now that you're releasing your own body of work?
I feel that there is a difference in the emotional weight between selling a song as a composer and covering songs by other artists. I feel much more cautious and carry a greater sense of gravity.
Q: Now that you're closing this chapter of your life, what do you want people to think of when they hear the name J.Fla?
I would like to be known as a trustworthy and reliable artist.
Q: This album is entirely composed, produced, and arranged by you. Which of the 10 tracks stood out to you the most after completing the project and why?
Personally, it’s the title track “Invisible Me” because there are two versions of this song. After completing the composition, recording, and mixing, I wasn't satisfied with it, so I started the whole process from scratch. I even re-recorded everything. That’s why this song holds a special place in my heart as it required more effort.
Q: Which song are you most proud of in this album?
If I had to choose one song, I would like to choose “Sorry I Made You Wait,” which I made for my fans. They patiently waited for my official album for a long time. Although I always express my gratitude for their unwavering support and love, words alone couldn't fully convey it. That's why I wanted to create a song as a gift to express my gratitude.
Q: You have expressed a desire to sing in various languages in your future works. Can we expect to hear those in your new album?
Since this album is focused on my story, all the lyrics are in English. But you can look forward to my next album as well.
Q: When did your interest in music begin?
Actually, since I was very young, it was a tradition and routine for my family to go out to dine and go to karaoke together every weekend. That's why I think I developed a love for music from an early age.
Q: What was your most-played song from your childhood? Did your family's music taste differ from yours?
When I was young, I used to sing a lot of songs that my parents liked. Now that I think about it, I realize that I was actually getting paid to sing back then. Because whenever I sang a song, they would give me pocket money. Haha!
Q: Your YouTube career has spanned over a decade, and you've managed to build your own community on a global scale. From your perspective, how do you feel about the rapid growth of the Korean music and entertainment scene, and has this influenced how you release your work?
The rapidly growing music industry in South Korea seems to have a positive impact even on independent artists like myself. In the past, I personally had some concerns about the entertainment industry itself being somewhat risky, but now that the system is becoming more established, it means that it can provide a favorable environment for emerging artists in the future.
Q: Are there any Korean producers or artists you'd like to collaborate with?
My fans strongly want me to collaborate with hip-hop artists. So, I really want to make a song with RM from BTS. I am also a fan myself.
Q: What is something you want listeners to take away from your album?
Comfort and healing. These are one of the goals of my music.
Q: Furthermore, now that the world has opened up more since the pandemic, when can international fans get the chance to meet you!
Of course. Although nothing is confirmed yet, I can confidently say that I am preparing for it.
