YUTA’s Rockstar Debut Depth
NCT 127 member YUTA makes his wildly anticipated solo debut with a Japanese rock EP and title track “Off The Mask.”
Depth
In this early 2000s J-Rock-inspired album, YUTA stands before us not as a member of NCT, but rather as a long-time lover of rock. The album’s sound is synonymous with that of popular J-Rock bands that YUTA grew up listening to such as ONE OK ROCK and L’arc-en-Ciel.
YUTA was able to show a part of himself that had been put on the back burner during NCT 127’s promotions. He often posts covers on Instagram of rock songs, which left fans anticipating a rock album from him.
Although this is a Japanese release, Depth is YUTA’s official debut as a solo artist. While the album is undeniably YUTA’s style, the genre was still a bold choice as the idol’s first solo EP. YUTA participated in writing nearly every song and producing many of them as well. The sound is cohesive throughout the seven tracks and lyrically deals with identity, expression, transformation, and freedom.
The title track “Off The Mask” is packed with energy as he chants, “Tonight I’ll show you my other side,” taking off his mask to show his authentic self.
The album starts with “Last Song” and ends with “Butterfly,” two of the album's softer rock tracks. “Butterfly” is YUTA’s first self-produced solo song, which he showcased in 2021 and served as his solo song for NCT 127’s tour The Link. The song tackles YUTA’s feelings about how he wants to grow as an artist and fly higher like a butterfly.
The album entered the Worldwide iTunes Album chart at No.6, making it the second-highest new entry.
