Actor Bae Inhyuk Becomes Everyone’s Date for Singles Day in New York

Those who dream of living out their very own K-Drama moment with a gorgeous leading man holding their hand, feeding them, or giving them a hug, flocked to the Shops at Skyview in Queens, NY on November 10. Though Pepero Day, aka Singles Day, is technically “11.11” as the digits form the basis of the holiday, Skyview took the weekend to celebrate with fashion, food, hair and makeup seminars, and of course, the date with Bae Inhyuk. In his first public visit to New York, he shared that the day prior he had explored Times Square and hoped to explore Brooklyn and Soho, and wanted to eat New York pizza.

Bae Inhyuk is known for his reserved, upright yet compelling characters in dramas such as The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract, Cheer Up, Under the Queen's Umbrella, and a personal favorite, At a Distance, Spring Is Green. His latest drama, Check-in Hanyang, is set to be released on December 21, right in time for the holiday season. As for his appearance that day, truth to be told, the charisma, shy smiles, heartfelt earnest demeanor that you see on the screen is even more vivid in person. The romantic leading man took the stage with many lucky fans to celebrate the day together.

Prior to the public events that day, Inhyuk sat down for a press conference to talk about the event, his drama, and to answer some of our questions. Dressed sharply in a white shirt, black tie, and leather jacket, he was the epitome of chic. Apart from the visuals and the smile, the most compelling aspect of Bae Inhyuk is his voice. His soft-spoken tone contrasts with his expressive, engaging demeanor, and through the day, this charisma showed why he was leading man worthy. Questions were asked at the public event as well, and we’ve compiled select questions and answers to get a sense of the man behind the dimples.

Q*: Can you tell us a bit about your latest drama, Check-in Hanyang?

A: In the drama, I may be a prince of the land, but I hide my identity for certain reasons and go to work undercover in a hotel. That’s the general idea of the drama.

Q*: On the way here we saw a lot of fans waiting outside. Do you have any message for your American fans?

A: First of all, since this is my first visit to the states, and it happens to be in New York, with nervous excitement, I’m happy I’m able to meet so many fans and it’s an honor to be here. I’m thankful that on such a busy and happy weekend, that you were able to make time for me and I hope that you have a good time.

Q: From the dramas that you’ve done so far, which character most closely represents your own character?

A: There’s no character that I can say is 100% me, but the character that is closest to my own, in my opinion, is the character in Cheer Up, Park Jungwoo.

Q*: What does it mean to you to be celebrating “Singles Day” in the U.S.?

A: First of all, I am very thankful that I was invited to Singles Day, which may be November 11, “Pepero Day.” I’ve heard it’s a day that singles celebrate together. Since I’m single, I hope to celebrate together with everyone and take away great memories from today.

Q*:  You've played so many romantic characters, what does love mean to you?

A: In Korean dramas, I think romance is essential. I’m very thankful to have lead roles in the romance genre. Romance roles require sensitivity and details, so I study and prepare a lot which helps me grow as an actor.

Q*:  Because you have such flawless skin, drop your skincare routine.

A: Nothing special for the skincare routine. I wash my face with water, and the most important part of the routine is that I was fortunate to have great parents.

Q*:  What is your all time favorite K-Drama?

A: Though it’s not a drama that I’m in, there’s a drama titled One Spring Night that I really like. It’s a really warm and moving story that I really enjoyed and remember.

Q*:  Who are the Korean actors that you see as a role model.

A: I’d say Hwang Jungmin and Lee Jihoon.

Q*:  How do you prepare yourself for different roles for each project?

A: First I review the story and try to pinpoint the character’s best qualities. I then think about it, and as I prepare for that character, I think, what aspects of the character will most people like, and how will they feel about it.

Q*:  Would you be willing to take on any negative roles?

A: I think my outfit today kind of looks like a villain (with a big smile). If the opportunity is presented to me, I would be willing to take on the bad guy role. Yes, if the role comes my way, I’ll make sure to show all of you my bad sides.

The questions were followed by a fashion contest where Inhyuk picked the style that worked best with him. Aside from the gift, the prize was to sit and have a romantic drink together. Random number picks brought excited fans to eat the kimbap and ramen that he prepared on stage. Yes, he did feed them directly, K-Drama style. More games and special moments would make the day especially memorable for Inhyuk and attendees. For this Singles Day, U.S. BaeBae’s (Inhyuk says he sees this fandom name used in Korea), can say that they spent the day with their leading man. We hope that he visits again soon, but until then, don’t forget to check out Check-in Hanyang which airs on December 21st.

Thank you to The Shops at Skyview and to Bae Inhyuk for inviting us to this event.
