Get Fired Up With Songs by KATSEYE and Jessi for Netflix’s Jentry Chau vs the Underworld

The soundtrack for Netflix’s upcoming animated show Jentry Chau vs the Underworld will feature songs from KATSEYE, Jessi, and other Asian American artists. KATSEYE sings the series’s theme song, “Flame,” and Jessi sings the track “3X (세 번).”Airing on December 5, the show centers around Chinese American teenager Jentry Chau as she fends off demons trying to steal her supernatural powers.

Showrunner and creator Echo Wu says the series explores what self-identity means and how that manifests in “different layers.” The show not only employs Asian-American artists for its soundtrack, but also Asian-American voice actors to breathe life into its characters. The cast includes Ali Wong—who portrays the title character—Bowen Yang, Lori Tan Chinn, Lucy Liu, Jimmy O. Yang, Sheng Wang, and The Rose’s Kim Woosung. KATSEYE and Jessi appear as two of the 12 artists that contributed to the show’s soundtrack:

  1. “Flame” by KATSEYE

  2. “3X (세 번)” by Jessi

  3. “Do You See Me” by Yaeji

  4. “Ghost” by Sugs

  5. “Face to Face” by Jonah Wolf

  6. “Sen Qi Qi (森77)” by Notiz Yong and Kenton Chen

  7. “See” by eaJ, formerly Jae of DAY6

  8. “Nightmare” by BAER

  9. “Sweetest Nothings” by thủy

  10. “Remember the Alarmo” by Rekstizzy

  11. “Maniacal” by Alice Longyu Gao

  12.  “Silhouette” by rei brown

“Flame”

Though KATSEYE may not be considered a wholly Asian American act like the rest of the lineup—only a few of their members identify as Asian American—they signify a joint effort between American and Asian music companies, Geffen Records and HYBE. “Flame” reflects the multiethnic aspect of both the show and the group by including lyrics in English, Mandarin, Spanish, and Korean. The song’s hook, “gotcha like a moth to a flame,” references Jentry’s fiery powers that she tries to hide. KATESEYE also uses the outro to reference their group’s, and their fandom’s, meshing of cultures: “KATSEYE from the east / KATSEYE from the west / EYEKONS on the prize.”

This surprisingly rap heavy song creates anticipation with its chanting, hip-hop beats, and mystical sound. The show’s score comes from Korean American musician Brian H. Kim, who also created the music for the Disney animated series Star vs. the Forces of Evil. Kim said on Instagram that it felt “incredible” to see a song he wrote in 2022 finally come to life through KATSEYE.

“3X (세 번)”

Though Jessi’s song “3X (세 번)” has yet to be released as of publication, the track appears in Jentry Chau vs the Underworld’s first teaser. Brian H. Kim also posted a clear but short clip of the song on Instagram. The small snippet of “3X (세 번)” carries an ominous energy that warns of the dangers to come.

“Check on every door / Come, come, come, coming through the floor,” Jessi sings, referencing the demons appearing at every corner. “No one coming to save you this time” also sends chills. With Jessi carrying a tough girl image, the collaboration seems perfect for a series about a young woman facing literal and figurative demons. The soundtrack for Jentry Chau vs the Underworld releases simultaneously with the show’s 13-episode season on December 5.
