Throwback Thursday: Christmas Covers

MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYONE! I truly hope that everyone has had a fantastic holiday season. During this magical time, many idols will release and perform many covers of iconic Christmas classics that we know and love. These performances are stacked, and many singers, rappers, and even actors got dressed in their Christmas best and performed with smiles on their faces. So, let’s take it back and talk about these fun Christmas covers. 

TWICE (Nayeon) - “Santa Tell Me” (Original by Ariana Grande) 

On December 23, 2019, TWICE member Nayeon released a beautiful cover of Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me.” We all know how beautiful this song is, and Nayeon did a fantastic job portraying that girly-pop energy that this song has. The entire video shows Nayeon wearing red and reindeer ears in the studio. We all know how strong and hearty Nayeon's voice is, but she does a mixture of soft and strong in this video. Something about this that stood out to me is how authentic this video is. As previously said, this video is filmed in the studio. You can see her reading the lyrics, making the song her own, and having fun. “Santa Tell Me” is a song that many play during this holiday time, and this version is an excellent addition to the list of songs to play this season.

NCT (Mark, Haechan) - “First Snow” (Original by EXO) and “Mistletoe” (Original by Justin Bieber) 

On December 24, 2019, the NCT MUSIC account posted a video of members Mark and Haechan singing an acoustic cover of two well-known holiday tracks. The first song is “First Snow” by fellow SM Entertainment boy group EXO. This song is iconic and is a loved song in South Korea. Every holiday season, when the first snow falls on the streets of Korea, many drop videos of them dancing to the song. In the video, Mark and Haechan can be seen sitting on a couch in comfortable pajamas. Mark has his guitar, and Haechan sings along with the strums. After singing this masterpiece, we then hear a different tune being played. When you realize this is “Mistletoe” by Justin Bieber, you can’t help but get excited and sing along. “Mistletoe” is a well-known song that gets played during the holiday season. Haechan's soulful voice, combined with Mark's guitar skills, creates a warm, cozy feeling. It’s a laid-back video filled with smiles and great holiday spirit. 

Red Velvet (Irene) and Park Bogum (Actor) - “Jingle Bell Rock” (Original by Bobby Helms) 

On December 25, 2015, two idols appeared on the Music Bank stage. This Christmas special was a combo that we didn’t know we needed. On that day, Red Velvet member Irene and actor Park Bogum collaborated on a stage to perform Bobby Helms's “Jingle Bell Rock.” Filled with bright smiles and bubbly energy, this performance of “Jingle Bell Rock” is a joy to watch. The two truly put a lot of work into this performance. They equally have a good amount of lines, and the choreography is adorable. They are dressed in red, white, and black festive clothing, and surrounded by candy canes and presents. “Jingle Bell Rock” is a well-known Christmas track, and when they are singing, you want to join in and sing along. This would be the perfect track to play in the background while opening those gifts under the tree.
