Things I Wish I Knew When I First Got Into K-Pop
Getting into the world of K-Pop can appear overwhelming and even intimidating. When you don’t know where to really start, here’s some things you should know when starting your journey with the genre.
Don’t be afraid to love K-Pop! While we all know not everyone will understand enjoying music in another language, all that matters is if you enjoy it yourself. As long as you’re the one enjoying it, then ultimately that’s the most important thing. Do what makes you happy, and if K-Pop is part of it then own it. There is so much to the genre that there is something for everyone. There is truly no limit to how many groups/idols you support, whether it’s one or 20! With the fifth generation of idols starting to debut, there are so many groups/soloists out there for you! Some fans out there try to dictate the kind of fan you are based on who you like, but don’t let that get in the way of enjoying who you just want to enjoy.
If you choose to partake in being a part of the online community, particularly Twitter, be mindful of who you interact with and recognize that a lot of misinformation and toxicity can spread quickly. Making friends can be fun in the process, but be aware of your own safety and mental health when you’re online. K-Pop Twitter can be fun but it definitely can have its limits too.
It also doesn’t matter how old you are, K-Pop is for people of all ages! This trend from younger fans calling anyone above the age of 20 “old” got old itself really quick and the entire second and third generations literally cater to the older age group because we are their age! But it ultimately doesn’t matter how old you are and whether you like groups who are in the second generation or the fifth - K-Pop is for everyone.
K-Pop is a great journey for anyone who dives in, make it your own and just have fun!
