Curating a Girl Group Game Night Playlist
There are K-Pop songs for every occasion, and this week’s Ladies Corner recommends some songs to play at your next game night. Whether you indulge yourself in some tabletop games or video games, always remember that K-Pop has that covered, too. Gather your friends, pick a game, and throw on some songs as the night goes on. You might even find a new favorite.
Apink - “D N D”
Apink’s “D N D” doesn’t stand for “Dungeons & Dragons,” but the song’s meaning isn’t too far off. Released on April 5, 2023 as part of Apink’s tenth EP [Self], “D N D” tells listeners to follow their dreams. It addresses a young adult audience who are still carving out their identities. “In the process of becoming an adult / It’s okay to say that you’re lost,” the lyrics of “D N D” say comfortingly.* Though the abbreviation actually stands for “Do Not Disturb,” the roleplaying aspect of “Dungeons & Dragons” also works with exploring different life paths.
NMIXX - “DICE”
A game of D&D can’t start without some dice. Good thing NMIXX’s first comeback has the members ready to roll some dice. Released on September 19, 2022 off the single album ENTWURF, “DICE” invites listeners to venture off into a “world beyond imagination.”* Much like the outcome of rolling a die, the song carries an unpredictable nature. “DICE” lyrically takes listeners from the skies to the waves of the beach, shifting with instrumental changes expected of NMIXX’s style. Those watching their performance can join in on the chorus’s point move, and chuck a dice in faith that it will land on something beneficial.
Heejin - “Video Game”
ARTMS’ Heejin 2023 solo EP <K> features “Video Game” as its fourth track. As explained in an interview with Korea JoongAng Daily, Heejin said the Disney movie “Wreck it Ralph” inspired the track. While the song lacks chiptune elements usually associated with game tracks, its lowkey nature is still enjoyable. Heejin wrote the lyrics alongside the song’s composers Johan Gustafsson, Teodor Dahibom, Julia Hallasen, and Hanna Lilliecreutz.
Kim Sejeong - “Jenga”
Track seven from Kim Sejeong’s first full album Door plays a game of “Jenga.” Kim Sejeong wrote the lyrics and composed the song with Coke paris and hongsamman. It's got some pluckiness and fire. It switches from gentle to powerful constantly throughout, keeping a tense anticipation. The beginning and end of the song uses a sound that reminds me of Jenga blocks clattering.
