The Career of BVNDIT

Back in 2019, MNH Entertainment debuted their first idol group, BVNDIT. Yiyeon, Songhee, Jungwoo, Simyeong, and Seungeun entered the K-Pop scene on April 10, 2019 as the anticipated “little sister group” for then labelmate Chungha

BVNDIT, Be Ambitious!

On April 10, 2019, BVNDIT debuted with their single album BVNDIT, Be Ambitious! and its title track “Hocus Pocus.” Son Youngjin and Ferdy of production group MosPick wrote and composed the song. The lyrics of this tropical track talk about drawing in someone’s attention. The song was musically in line with the sound MNH Entertainment carved out for Chungha, who was the company’s first artist.

The B-side on the single album, “My Error,” was the first song teased by BVNDIT: in March, the group kicked off their YouTube channel with a video showing the song’s recording process. Written and composed by Park Woosang, “My Error” is a calm track with a jazz lounge vibe.

BE!

BVNDIT came out with their first mini-album BE! on November 5, 2019. It included the track “BE!,” the title track “Dumb,” a new B-side “Fly,” and previously-released tracks “Dramatic,” “Hocus Pocus,” and “My Error.” “Dramatic” originally served as the group’s first comeback track on May 15, 2019.  It featured moombahton beats with a similar tropical feeling to “Hocus Pocus.” The song was composed and arranged by Flow Blow, The Proof, and PENTAGON’s Hui.

The moombahton beats continued in the title track “Dumb,” composed by LDN Noise, Anne Judith Stokke Wik, and Karen Poole. The music video placed a large emphasis on choreography shots and showed a larger alluring image. BE! kept some familiarity with BVNDIT, Be Ambitious! but amped up the dance nature of their songs.

Carnival

BVNDIT continued to put out dance tracks with their following release. Their second mini-album Carnival and its title track “JUNGLE”  dropped on May 13, 2020. The picturesque music video featured grand shots of buildings, including a large theater.

Son Youngjin and Ferdy returned with the rest of the MosPick team, Yeah Nice and Jay Jay, to compose and write “JUNGLE.” Musically, “JUNGLE” jumps in intensity as the song goes on. The ending portion includes a saxophone-heavy dance break that continues through to the end. Carnival also includes “Cool,” BVNDIT’s English single from that February, and “Children,” the April pre-release for the mini-album.

Re-Original

A long hiatus followed Carnival. BVNDIT did not release any music in 2021, but Seungeun participated in Mnet’s Girls Planet 999. Though she left the show after the first elimination round, she continued her role as a BVNDIT member. On May 3, 2022, MNH Entertainment announced the group’s next mini-album, which came out that same month.

Two years after the release of Carnival, BVNDIT released their third and final mini-album Re-Original on May 25, 2022. “VENOM” was composed by Bayside Pablo, Kim Taeyeong (김태영), B.O., and KZ, the latter two of which wrote the lyrics. The title track “VENOM” leaned into a “bad girl” image with some addictive dance beats.

Later that year in November, BVNDIT disbanded. Shortly before disbandment, Yiyeon and Seungeun began participating on Kakao’s VR idol survival show GIRLS RE:VERSE as Ujewel and Zzaru, respectively. This year, the BVNDIT members filmed a dance channel for Loco and Punch’s “Say Yes,” via a short uploaded to Yiyeon’s YouTube channel.
