Hearing-Impaired Idol Group Big Ocean and DAY6’s Young K Inspire Unity with “SLOW”
Big Ocean continues to make waves in the K-Pop industry, and now the trio has teamed up with DAY6’s Young K for “SLOW.” Despite the release’s name, K-Pop’s first idol group with hearing impairments shows no signs of slowing down. “SLOW” becomes Chanyeon, Hyunjin, and Jiseok’s third single of this year. It follows their debut track “Glow” from April and their second single “BLOW” in June.
Released on August 11, the ballad “SLOW” carries a message of comfort. It reflects on precious moments shared between people, and promises an undying level of support. It acknowledges that everyone’s experiences happen differently. As Jiseok’s rap goes, “now there’s nothing to fear / even if it takes a little longer.”*
Young K takes the chorus, which assures listeners to experience life at their own pace. Though Young K contributes only singing as opposed to lyric-writing, another well-known skill of his, his vocals add another level of strength. The song’s lyrics and composition come courtesy of 서주원.
The minimalist music video focuses on the Big Ocean members signing. They convey the song’s lyrics in various types of sign language. The group learnt Korean Sign Language (KSL) and American Sign Language (ASL), and International Sign Language (ISL) while preparing to debut.
