It’s Time to “JAM!” to BOYNEXTDOOR’s New EP The Action - EP

After an unforgettable album earlier this year, BOYNEXTDOOR is back with another release that will have you on your feet and ready to dance. Just this May, the boys released their album No Genre, which took the title to heart. With each song being a completely different genre, we got to see a wide range from BOYNEXTDOOR. Now, they are back with that signature sound we know and love. Their new release, The Action - EP, really takes things to the next level. There are five songs on the EP, and each song is super unique, showcasing, again, the range of the members.

The Action - EP Tracklist:

  1. “Live In Paris”

  2. “Hollywood Action”

  3. “JAM!”

  4. “Bathroom”

  5. “As Time Goes By”

As said before, this EP features a variety of sounds, making each song distinct from the next. For example, the first song on the EP is “Live In Paris.” Featuring a very 80s synth beat, it also has elements of ‘70s funk styling. With that funk sound, the members sing in a lower tone, but still showcase stellar falsettos that make this a groovy song.

The next song is the title track, “Hollywood Action.” Really focusing on a retro concept — that they perform excellently — “Hollywood Action” showcases a jazz swing/big band sound that adds a groovy vibe to the song. Throughout the song, you can hear many different instruments, which makes it a livelier experience for the listener. The different horns, drums, and bass guitars create the jazz and dance band sound we hear from artists like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. The boys can be heard singing with so much excitement. Also, still influenced by the 1920s and 1930s, you can hear the boys using techniques from that time, such as vocal drags at the end of notes and random moments when their vocal tones jump up to falsetto, then back down to their lower register. It shows their skillful vocal range, and it stands out so much.

The music video is so cool. Since the song is called “Hollywood Action,” the boys are seen throughout the video performing action stunts, filming a movie, watching movies, and dancing on movie sets. Taking the title literally, they paint the picture adequately. Speaking of choreography, the boys have such lively choreography that you can feel their excitement through the screen. They focus heavily on detail in this dance. For example, there is one lyric that goes “Scream like a thriller,” where the members mimic a zombie's hand movement and a film slate claps, since it’s movie-themed. “Hollywood Action” is such a great song, and it's exciting to listen to.

The Action - EP is such an exciting mini-album. Each song is special and can become anyone’s favorite (my personal favorites are “Hollywood Action,” “Bathroom,” and “As Time Goes By”). The songs are so good; I recommend everyone take a listen. So, check out The Action - EP for a blast to the past with that BOYNEXTDOOR charm.
