TRACKLIST:
“Beat It Up” (Title Track)
“Rush”
“Cold Coffee”
“Butterflies”
“Tempo”
“TRICKY”
“Beat It Up,” An Explosive Title Track
The music video for “Beat It Up” continues with the boxing theme from their last comeback Go Back to the Future. The visuals are striking and in your face—a perfect representation for what the song is all about. The chorus can be a little repetitive, but it makes for the perfect anthem. The imagery of the falling buildings behind their powerful choreography adds to the music and showcases how NCT Dream is in charge of building their own reality.
The B-sides create an almost tug-of-war feeling, going back and forth from zero to 100. “Rush” is an immersive experience, a synth blend of hip-hop and electronic beats. It’s a complementary flow from “Beat It Up,” with an aesthetically pleasing hook that’s airy and crisp. It keeps the pace of the title yet transitions into the next set of ballads without feeling too jarring.
“Cold Coffee” is refreshing and unique, and a fitting title for such an imaginative song. It’s very bright compared to the rest of the album, but blends nicely in the middle as a showcase of the group’s overall strong vocals. It’s followed up with “Butterflies,” an endearing yet sentimental acoustic ballad sung by Haechan, Chenle, and Renjun. Their dazzling voices shine on such an honest love song, taking you on a mellow ride before the album picks up the pace again.
“Tempo” amps up energy as its beat is reminiscent of older ‘90s hip-hop. Performed by Mark, Jeno, Jaemin, and Jisung, the intensity from the title track circles back through the album with this fiery tune. It feels like they pressed on the gas, taking the listening experience from one end of the spectrum to the other.
Out of all the songs, “TRICKY” caught my attention the fastest. With a bold opener, the chorus is an ear worm that I couldn’t help but replay over and over again. It locks you in and keeps you wanting more even though it’s the last song. It’s a stand out on an already killer album.
NCT Dream have become masters of any genre they get their hands on. Their dedication to their craft is shown through their versatility and quality of the music they release. This album is a banger that’ll entertain new and dedicated fans alike.
