We’ve been following Lee Jinhyuk’s solo career since it launched in 2019, and the last music we had from him was a year ago with the mini-album New Quest: Jungle. This time, he returns with a digital single D - XXXX, featuring three tracks and three music videos in the release. The drop was a bit of a surprise, with only a four-day notice on the news cycle before album release, a surprise album drop to mark the 2000th day anniversary of his solo career launch.

“Letter”

First up is “Letter,” a soft R&B track that gives us Zion.T vibes. The sweet and upbeat track has more of a vocal focus and gives off the happy-go-lucky vibes of early springtime. The composition is simple, and that’s the beauty of it: just a simple warm song to convey a cheerful and supportive message. The video also matches in simplicity, showcasing Jinhyuk exploring around a slowly blooming spring scene with a camcorder for the majority of the video.

“Be your side”

“Be your side” continues the K-R&B chill vibes with a bit less acoustic influences in the melody, referencing the anniversary of 2000 days with his fans. The song is upbeat and just as sweet as “Letter,” albeit a bit shorter. It’s another simple video to accompany as well, but this time with Jinhyuk in an urban setting instead. The two tracks contrast in setting and outfit choice, perhaps to showcase two different sides to the artist.

“Always”

The final track is “Always,” a slower R&B ballad type of track, but with the same warm tone portrayed in the previous two songs. The track has a very calming aura, with even his rap tone remaining soft when it is usually rather sharp and concise. It overall has a very calming and warm vibe that feels very relaxing. This music video is obviously the favorite because of the puppy features.

While the digital release is overall quite simple, the overall theme of the album as a gift for fans is a very sweet gesture. The softer R&B tone of the album holds a lot of feel-good energy and leaves us refreshed, starting off the week. Congratulations on five years, Jinhyuk.
