Hearts2Hearts, SM Entertainment’s rookie girl group, is back with a charming summer song. Released on June 18, the single “STYLE” uses bubblegum pop for a refreshing sound. This digital track marks the group’s first comeback after their debut on February 24. Jiwoo, Carmen, Yuha, Stella, Juun, A-na, Ian, and Ye-on come ready to show a new, fashionable concept.

Hearts2Hearts enter summer with an upbeat dance song composed by Mike Daley, Mitchell Owens, Adrian McKinnon, and Sara Forsberg. In contrast with the mysterious and dreamy feeling of their debut single “The Chase,” “STYLE” showcases addictive bubblegum pop. The optimism in this song plays up the innocence also seen in the song’s lyrics. Like with “The Chase,” KENZIE wrote the Korean lyrics for “STYLE.” Where “The Chase” ponders about the future ahead, the narrator in “STYLE” ponders about their crush.

Though the lyrics focus on teen crushes, the music video focuses on capturing memories with friends from school. The group enjoys activities such as snapping polaroids, taking pictures in a photobooth, and scrapbooking. The video also features the repeated appearance of four-leaf clovers, likely referencing how Hearts2Hearts describes the crush as “one of a kind.” As an adult, these kinds of concepts bring back a sense of nostalgia for the simple joys in high school.

Hearts2Hearts’s decision to release “STYLE” breaks a tradition established by SM Entertainment’s previous two girl groups, aespa and Red Velvet; their first comebacks remade songs by senior SM Entertainment artists. While this does not erase the possibility of remakes in the future, a new original song by Hearts2Hearts makes for a sweet surprise.
