When it comes to K-Pop group leaders, few stand out quite like S.Coups. Born Choi Seungcheol in Daegu, South Korea, he’s been at the center of SEVENTEEN’s success since the very beginning. Known for his grounded presence, artistic input, and genuine care for his team, it’s fair to say that S.Coups often acts as the glue that holds SEVENTEEN together through the highs, the lows, and everything in between.
From Trainee to Leader
Before SEVENTEEN ever debuted, S.Coups was already putting in serious work. He trained under Pledis Entertainment for six years, one of the longest periods in K-Pop. At one point, he was supposed to debut in NU’EST, then with a group called TEMPEST, but his path shifted.
Fans first got to know him through the reality show 17TV, where he stood out not just for his skills but also for the way he naturally assumed a leadership role. He brought people together, stayed calm under pressure, and always looked out for the group.
Building the Sound of SEVENTEEN
Since their debut in 2015, SEVENTEEN has built a reputation as a “self-producing” group, and S.Coups has played a big role in that. He’s SEVENTEEN’s main rapper, head of their hip-hop unit, and a creative force behind many of their songs. From early tracks like “Adore U” to global hits like “Super” and “God of Music,” he’s helped shape the group’s sound alongside members like Woozi and producer Bumzu.
In December 2023, he released a solo single called “Me,” a more personal track that gave fans a deeper look into his mindset and growth as an artist.
Facing Challenges Head-On
Like many idols, S.Coups has had tough moments. In 2019, he took a break from activities to take care of his mental health. It was a brave and honest move that opened up an important conversation within the K-Pop community. He came back in 2020, welcomed with love and support from fans and fellow members.
Then in 2023, he suffered a torn ACL that required surgery and rest. Even while recovering, he still made appearances at award shows and events, showing support from the sidelines. His dedication to the group never wavered, no matter what.
Recognition, Respect, and Real Impact
Thanks to his leadership, SEVENTEEN has become one of the most successful K-Pop groups in the world. They’ve won major awards, earned global chart success, and are known for doing things their own way, creatively.
In 2025, S.Coups became a full member of the Korea Music Copyright Association, which recognized his songwriting and producing contributions. It was a well-earned moment that reflected how far he’s come. S.Coups has also delved into philanthropy work, made donations to causes like disaster relief and animal shelters. Whether it’s through his music or his actions, he consistently shows that leadership is about service, not status.
S.Coups’s story shows that leadership today is about compassion, teamwork, and knowing when to step back so others can shine too. He’s proven that strength doesn’t always mean being the loudest voice. Sometimes it means listening, adapting, and putting your people first.
As SEVENTEEN keeps breaking new ground internationally, S.Coups will no doubt remain a steady and essential part of their journey. His impact goes beyond music. It lives in the way he supports others, takes care of himself, and leads with intention.
