Hello “SaWaDiKa”

LISA came out swinging when she dropped her prerelease “SaWaDiKa.” It’s a proud, bold statement that acts as both an introduction to those unfamiliar with her work and an exhibition of her Thai heritage. “SaWaDiKa” wastes no time in getting started with its punchy hook. The music video is just as eye-catching as the song sounds with intense choreography to demonstrate how powerful it is as the first song on the EP.

Her single “Tarantino”, dropped the same day as the EP release, draws inspiration from director Quentin Tarantino and the movie Kill Bill: Volume 1. If it wasn’t clear before how cinematic this EP would be, then it is explicitly known in the music video for “Tarantino.” It is action-packed and witty, with entertaining fight scenes and a captivating charm. The song itself has a western edge to it, layered with drums and a distinctive banjo addition. The lyrics “It's a movie, baby, come and press play” reiterate the theme behind this EP and its overall larger-than-life aesthetic.

The B-sides of PRESS PLAY each function like scenes in a movie, adding depth without disrupting the EP's momentum. Each offers a different vibe while without feeling out of place. “V12” has a heavy heart-thumping beat underlying LISA’s smooth rapping. It’s more restrained than the singles, but tactfully done to show LISA’s ability to adapt and control any track she’s on. She cranks up the energy in “Cobra,” interpolating Missy Elliot’s “Pass that Dutch” while adding her own personal cadence and flair. Driven by fierce energy and the atmosphere of an early 2000s club, “Cobra” is a track that you can’t help but get up and dance to.

The famous whistling from the character Elle Driver in Kill Bill: Volume 1 opens the song “Cut U Off.” It’s a sharp and direct track where LISA isn’t afraid to cut ties with people or situations that no longer serve her. “Sweat” closes out the EP with its sensual, flirtatious vibe. It’s a fitting ending while not diverting the EP off course with its bewitching groove.

PRESS PLAY is a visual experience just as much as it is a listening one. It plays exactly like a movie, painting a vivid picture for the listener through a foundation of pop and hip-hop. LISA has refined her storytelling since Alter Ego. She has established the foundation to fully express her creative vision and cement her place as a global pop icon.
